Rising in the Portal: XLVII

Andraste was tired. Exhausted really, but she didn't say any of that. Her head beaded with sweat. "I don't hear anything." She responded by holding her large sword above the party's head.

"Careful with that thing!" Horadias yelped trying to get out of the path of her sword.

"Oh don't be such a baby." Fionor laughed, the older elf smacked the tiefling on the back. Andraste try'd to hold the sword higher but found her arm aching even more. "Andraste can you get that any higher? I think James, Robbie, and Silica need the light."

"Of course." She sputerted quickly, she held the blade with two arms now; the glowing moon touched great sword was easily nine feet above them.

"Much better!" Francis exclaimed. Ugh.. Francis. Andraste did not wish to think ill of the mind flayer, but he wreaked of raw sewage mixed with rotting fish, a fact that made her wish he would step back. Their footsteps echoed loudly against the underdark's cavern walls giving her a little spook every few seconds. She couldn't discern from her ally's noises to potential enemies.

"Where is the portal?!" Sundrop begged, the little troublemaker of a Kender was hopping in place stomping about like a child. 'Dang..' Andraste had only taken this quest to not be reminded of her kid.. Her husband.. So far for distractions it hadn't worked.

"I don't know." Andraste admitted studying the architecture of the cavern hallway. "It must be here somewhere.. I.."

*YIOBREEQILLOPPERRASH*

She spun on her heel to the large gut wrenching crackling noise that echoed down the cavern. Her vision was suddenly filled with a dark black mist. "What was that?!" Aodhan demanded the half-elfs voice came from somewhere around her, but suddenly Andraste couldn't place his presence in the cavern. 'Where.. What.. I need to see.' she thought. Her eyes were obscured by the heavy smoke, something that didn't make any sense to her. She had dark vision as did all elves! She should have seen the danger. Panic filled her arms she dropped the great sword, feeling no one in front of her.

"I don't know! I-I can't see you guys!" Haren screamed Andraste tried to make her way to the Half-dragon's voice beggin the mist to lift so she could see her blue eyed friend.

"What the hell is this?!" Fionor screamed in terror, Andraste spun in circles hearing nothing but echoing voices in the cavern. She couldn't place anyone.

*YUGRRRRRR*

A bone chilling growl filled her sense Andraste swung her greatsword wildly feeling like it caught something. "T-there's something here!" She wailed. Her left side exploded in pain like someone was burning her flesh melting it right off the bone. "AGHH!" She tried to swing again but caught nothing. It was as if the force was that very fog tearing at her.

"F-" Haren began screaming a blood curdling terror filled cry for help, Andraste pushed through someone she grabbed them on instinct only for her arm to be engulfed in a similar pain as before.

"Run! It's everywhere!" Fionor raged, Andraste tore through the ground trying to will her body to cast a spell, any kind of spell. Did she really not have anything to dispel this mystical fog?

"HELP!" James begged, his voice was wet before it became silenced with more screaming.

"OOH TYR, WHAT ARE YOU?!" Hordias cursed. Andraste's back was raked against with enormous claws. She swung her sword around in the direction of its source, slicing into something as her blade tore through some kind of flesh.

"I got-" She started "AH!" Her right leg felt like it had been torn off flames now we're definitely consuming it, in the fog she finally made out her first true sight. What felt like miles away Andraste spotted two large black and purple gleaming spots like a burning hellflame; eyes.

"Robbie! Run!" Aodhan screamed again. Andraste turned trying to gather her surroundings; she dug her hands against the gravelly dirt sprinting in the direction opposite those purple eyes. She slashed at the air trying to get anything.

"G-GO!" Hands shoved against Andraste she felt her body be flung through the air as someone.. Someone pushed her. The voice was followed by wails of agony, she stumbled backwards having been shoved. Light filled her irises and the damp cave walls became visible once again. In front of her she saw the corridor stretch for miles. Behind her.. Andraste turned to the massive cloud of fog she had just escaped the sounds of screams and wails of agony filling her ears.

"GO! SOMEONE RUN!" Silica begged the walls. Andraste felt goosebumps run up her arms, a chilling fear consuming her. And so.. She ran. She dug her fingers through the ground spinning about, she sprinted desperately through the cave chagrin for some sense of hope. A strange indigo purple like flame blew past her filling the cavern with an odd cackling like sound. A symbol seemed to ignite in the flames filling her vision with its depth;

Something she could not recognize. It quickly faded from her memory with the instinct to run engulfing it. Her left leg was bleeding, her back was scorched and burned her arms boht felt like they were going to fall off. Every breath she took felt like an agonizing inhale of poisonous gas. She huffed begging for sweeter air blood trickling down from her abdomen which she suspected could have been sliced in so deep she would lose her entrails long before she bled to death.

"HELP!" She cringed at the cries behind her, knowing there was nothing she could do. The wails of pain and screams of agony filled her ears like stinging bees.

"There!" She yelped after what felt like hours of running, but was probably the only one. She spotted the tall shaft of the yawning portal entrance. A crude thirty foot wide limestone tower which opened in a single direction. Her freedom, her salvation. Chills ran down her spine she furiously banged the bell collapsing on the rusted iron grate attached to chain pulley. "Help.." She croaked. "Selune.. Please help me.." She felt tears spill from her eyes face down on the elevator's floor.

*DRING-DRING*

Andraste laughed hysterically with tears spilling from her when the grate began to rise to the portal being accepted. Her vision was foggy and her body screamed in agony from every pore. She probably blacked out on the way up.

"She's still alive! Mattrim stabilize her!" She heard some voice order, her mind faded in and out of consciousness. The soft light of the yawning portal made her sigh in relief, she was alive.. Safe.. she.. Her mind raced to her allies. They..

"Stay with me.." The softest voice whispered in her ear. Andraste gazed into the honey brown eyes of a man. A handsome face laid above her singing some sweet words, words in a language she couldn't make out in the moment. Pain slowly faded from her form she took deep heavy breaths observing the long brown hair tickling her shoulders. "Stay. With. Me." The figure demanded above.

"Yes sir.." She whispered, delirious from the pain.

"She.. she's stable but.. We need a cleric." Voices filled her ears Andraste wanted to pass out but the man's hand pushed against her face. A soft gentle touch filling her with warmth. "There's one in the Alley.. The one who saved Renaer.. The party at TrollSkull manor." She struggled to listen to them and her body felt so warm.. So tired. Andraste's eyes rolled back in her head as darkness engulfed her body like a warm blanket.
