A/N- This imagine is based on the song "We'll Meet Again" by Vera Lynn. The song has brought me to tears many times before and I assume that I am not alone in that. I hope you all enjoy it.
You were clinging to Bucky as though the world were about to end, and for you it seemed as though it would. You had only found out a week before that your fiancé was planning on signing up to the army and you had been set against it instantly. You were certain he wouldn't return, and you could tell how agitated the confession had left Steve.
"If you keep holding me like this I'll miss my bus," he told you softly, pressing his lips to the top of your head as you sniffled slightly.
"That's the point," you murmured, your words muffled by his uniform. He looked dashing, so handsome and grown up compared to the boy you knew him to be, but now there was a damp patch on his lapel from your tears as you pulled out of his grip.
"I won't be gone long, Darling, training is only for a few weeks and then I get leave," he whispered as he leaned down to press a kiss to your lips.
"What do I do if you don't come back?" you asked suddenly. Your eyes were already sore from the crying you had done as you had thought about it over the last week, and your throat was raw from the sob that had successfully escaped your chest.
"Don't say that," he started quietly, his hand coming to rest lightly on your cheek, "I promise you I'll be home soon."
"You can't promise that," you grumbled, leaning away from his touch, "I saw Penny last week and she was in pieces, her brother had only been out there a fortnight and she got a letter saying he was dead, Buck. I can't imagine what I would do if something happened to you."
"Darling, I will come home to you, you can't get rid of me that easily." He leant down and pressed a final kiss to your lips, resting his forehead against yours for just a moment. "I love you." Within moments he was moving towards the bus he was taking to his training. Your eyes widened as you hurried over, watching as he moved down the bus and managing to get closer to the bus, craning your neck to glance up at him as he took his seat. You reached up and knocked lightly against the window, causing him to laugh as he looked down at you.
Within seconds he had the sliding window open and you fought back the new flow of tears as you called out to him, "I love you too, Buck. Be safe."
*Time Skip*
When you got back to your apartment that evening you found Steve waiting for you on your doorstop, his knees drawn up to his chest as he sat on the cold stone step. "Hey," you murmured, causing him to glance up at you, a sad, and surprised, smile on his lips.
"Hey," he answered softly, getting to his feet to move out of your way, and following closely behind you as you pushed the door open. "Bucky said you might want someone to keep you company tonight."
You let out a soft chuckle. "He's such a good guy," you muttered, forcing away the tears that began forming, "God, I hate it sometimes."
Steve's hand was rubbing your back softly as he followed you around the apartment, watching as you toyed with anything your hands came into contact with. "He's doing what he thinks is right, If I could pass the tests I would be right there with him," he told you quietly and you released another taught chuckle.
"Don't do it, Stevie," you said as you turned to face him, "you would break my damn heart, I can't feel like this again, I just can't." You wiped at your eyes as you spoke, getting rid of the gathering tears.
"Y/N, those Germans are bad guys, and someone needs to stop them."
"Why does it have to be you?" you cried out, your voice rising as you moved away from him, "Why Bucky? Why us?"
