Iceland (Emil Steilsson) x Reader SoulmateAU!

Warning: Potentially gruesome

Hope swelled within the chests of people across the globe as seconds passed and brought them closer to their soulmate. Emil stared at his soulmate watch in solemn silence as the numbers decreased as the seconds continued to pass. He lifted his violet gaze to stare at the female seated across the table from him with, her gaze focused on her own soulmate watch. She looked back up at him and attempted to rid herself of her strained expression with a small smile, "Emil, what's wrong?" He glanced down at the numbers displayed on the watch and she tried to ignore the flash of pain in her chest "I understand how you feel Emil. I'm confused about all of this, but the one thing I'm certain of is that I love you and nothing will change that." He looked back up at her and a tiny smile formed on his face "I know. I feel the same way too Rose." She visibly relaxed and stood up from her chair "I'm going to go get us some hot chocolate. I'll be back." "Okay," he replied briefly, before turning his attention back to his watch. 'Ten minutes until I meet my soulmate' he thought to himself.

An unpleasant feeling of hope, anger, and despair mixed together within him and Emil tried to shut off his thoughts. He loved his current girlfriend and he'd loved her the entire five years they were together, but every time he glanced at his wrist, the watch told him they weren't meant to be together. He'd known this when they had first met and he'd told himself not to get attached to her, yet when he'd look at her and she'd smile back in response, warmth would bloom in his chest and a beautiful pink would decorate his cheeks. He looked across from him and watched as she happily took a seat across from him. She handed him his hot chocolate and her gaze made its way to his watch. 'Five minutes' she thought, blinking away the tears threatening to escape. She loved Emil more than life itself. She wasn't sure she'd be able to function the same if she had lost him to his destined soulmate. Her chest swirled in pain as she turned to look down at her own watch that appeared broken.

Emil followed her gaze and internally frowned at the broken watch. He knew she didn't have a soulmate. Hers had died when she was ten years old and they had met an hour before his death. "Thank you" he stated, and she looked up at him in mild confusion "For?" He calmly took a sip of his hot chocolate "For the hot chocolate." He glanced down at his watch to notice a minute left "And..." Emil took a deep breath as he placed his hot chocolate down gently on the table "For being so wonderful to me these past five years." "Emil I..." she began, to be cut off by a small squeak of surprise and the sight of Emil drenched in water. "I'm so sorry!" The girl exclaimed, only to pause in surprise as a loud beep rang throughout the cafe. Emil looked down at his watch to notice three zeroes lined up next to each other in bright red. The girl stared at Emil with wide eyes and the workings of a blush appearing on her cheeks "I'm sorry about the mess." He uncomfortably looked over at his girlfriend "It's okay."

She watched Emil look back towards the unknown girl with different emotions running rampant through his eyes. She observed the girl from across the table and felt an intense disliking of her forming within her. She didn't understand why she had to lose Emil to a random girl who knew nothing about him, who'd spilt water on him, and who was currently staring at him with eyes filled with love. Emil blinked a few times to clear his head "Don't worry about the mess." The girl nodded with slight embarrassment "Thank you for understanding." Silence enveloped the trio until the girl extended her hand towards Emil "I'm Erin." Emil awkwardly shook her hand "I'm Emil." Erin nervously shifted on her feet "May I have your number? To keep in touch, if that's okay?" Emil looked over at Rose who glanced away from him "Yeah, that's fine, but I'm a bit busy right now, perhaps we can continue this later?" She nodded in understanding and left immediately after receiving his number.

Uncomfortable silence hovered over the couple. Both remained in silence as they battled their emotions. They were prepared for the inevitable, yet the suddenness of the event confused them both. Rose took a deep breath and stood up from her seat "I'm going to head home." Emil nodded with an understanding look present in his eyes. She watched him in slight expectation that he'd reject his soulmate and choose her, yet he remained quiet as he fiddled with his cup of cold hot chocolate. Anger consumed her as she exited the cozy cafe and walked back into the cold winter air to return to her home. Emil watched her leave from his chair in the cafe. He sighed and placed his head on the cool table with his eyes closed. He knew he'd meet his soulmate today, but he could never have prepared himself for this moment. He loved his girlfriend with his entire heart, but the introduction of his soulmate threw his emotions off balance. He wanted to remain with his girlfriend, but he also felt destined to be with his soulmate and he felt the need to be with her. He opened his eyes with a soft sigh and stood up from his chair. He took one last glance at the now empty table before exiting the cafe to return home.

Two weeks passed by in a blur and Emil stared out the window as the snow fell from the sky to decorate the ground in a beautiful white blanket. For the tenth time in a week, Emil looked down at his soulmate watch to stare at the numbers in confusion. His watch had reset itself and he watched the seconds go down "Thirty seconds." He turned to look back out the window, but paused at the sight of a person walking towards his door. He got up from his spot on the couch and opened the door to an exhausted looking Rose. He watched her in slight concern "What happened?" The two barely registered the loud beep and three bright red zeroes lined up next to each other on their watches. "I'm so sorry Emil" she sobbed out, reaching out and clinging to him. His face remained calm despite his emotions growing out of control within him "What happened?" "She's dead" she muttered, tightening her grip on her boyfriend "I killed her." Emil tensed up at the words "What?" She looked up at him with crazed eyes and tears staining her cheeks "I couldn't live without you. I couldn't accept the fact that she'd take you away from me." Emil paused in realization "You..."

Tears stung at his eyes and he attempted to blink them away "Off. Get off me." She shook her head and pulled him closer to her "Emil don't you love me? We can be together now. We're soulmates now that she's gone." Emil removed her hands from him and took a step back. His face remained monotone despite the fear consuming his entire being "I do love you. I've loved you for five years, but..." He paused in his words and took another step back "I can't. I can't be with you." Her expression fell and she leaned against his living room wall "But I did this for you. I killed a person for you. I...I killed someone..." The sound of police sirens startled her "What? Did you...?" Emil stared at her in silence and fear as the police entered the house and removed her from the premise. "Emil?" A familiar monotone voice called out, and he turned around to look at his older brother Lukas. Despite his attempts, tears broke free and freely flowed down his cheeks as he ran into Lukas' open arms "I'm so lost. I don't know what to do." Lukas calmly ran a hand through Emil's hair "It's okay. We'll figure everything out. Don't worry." Lukas remained by Emil's side throughout the night and supported him through his nightmares.

Emil found his gaze focused once again on the soulmate watch stuck forever on his wrist. "Emil? Is something wrong?" A female voice asked, the owner staring at him in confusion. Emil shook his head and sent her a soft smile "I'm okay (Y/N)." She smiled in relief and took a seat next to him on the couch "I'm glad we met. If I hadn't met you at the park by chance two years ago, I'd probably be sitting on my couch all alone right now." Emil laughed lightly at the comment "I think I'd be experiencing the same thing." (Y/N) smiled up at him and snuggled into his side to enjoy his warmth. The two focused on the film playing on their television as they occasionally indulged in the popcorn placed on Emil's lap. "Look at the lovebirds Berwald!" Mikkel announced, startling the young couple with his loud announcement.

Berwald merely sighed in reply as Mikkel bounded over to them and pulled the two into a tight bear hug "I missed you guys!" Emil pushed at Mikkel gently and complained about the affection as (Y/N) laughed in amusement. Mikkel released the two of them when Lukas entered the room and Emil sunk back into the couch. He pulled (Y/N) back into his side and buried his flushed face in her neck to hide his embarrassment. His violet eyes trained themselves on her soulmate watch as she ran a comforting hand through his hair. She had lost her soulmate ten years ago, and after eight years of loneliness she had found Emil. Emil sighed in content and pulled her even closer to him.

Notes:

Prompt: Soulmate

Ok so I know this style of writing might be a little bit more extreme than what you guys are used to, but I thought it was a fun idea and I ran with it

Also, in case there is some confusion, this is mainly Emil's story and the reader doesn't appear in the story until the last two paragraphs, which means you are not the two girls mentioned in the beginning

In reference to the two girls, the names were randomly chosen and were only given to prevent confusion

I know there are a lot of timeskips, which I don't like, but it was necessary

I hope you enjoyed this

Next is France.
