Hours Ago

Something felt way off.

No, not just something.

Everything felt off.

And he couldn't pinpoint as to why.

"Uncle Jakey said he'd read with me today," Natalia chortled, skipping into Lucius' bedroom where he had been laying on his bed the entire day, a cigarette at the corner of his lips. "Do you know where he is?" Lucius glanced towards Natalia, her round confused eyes searching around the room as if Jake was hidden somewhere in there.

"He's not home."

Natalia didn't pick up on the irritation echoing from Lucius' tone, and she skipped forward, leaping onto his bed. "When is he coming back?"

"I don't know."

She leaned her head against his shoulder. "Where did he go?"

Lucius' eyes narrowed. "I don't know."

Natalia sighed, standing on the bed and jumping back and forth over Lucius's feet. "Did he tell you where he was going?"

"If he had told me, I wouldn't have said that I don't know."

"You seem moody today." She jumped one more time before landing on her side, still on the bed. "Are you moody?"

"Yes, I am."

"Are you hungry?"

Lucius squeezed his eyes shut; if it had been one of his brothers, he would have slammed his knuckles directly onto their nose. Just because he became a parent didn't mean that his raging tendencies had disappeared, he merely gotten better at controlling them around a five years old.

"No," he exhaled slowly.

She leaned her head against his shoulder again. "Mom says you're usually just hungry when you're mad."

"That's not even true," he grumbled angrily.

Natalia raised her eyebrows, an idea crossing her mind that she thought of herself to be a genius to think of it. "Why don't you call Uncle Jakey and see where he is?"

Lucius glanced towards her; at first, he was going to tell her how bad of an idea that was, but the longer pause he took, the more he realized that he also was curious as to how Jake was doing.

Had he reached Bronsted and Jules' place safely?

He also had a prosthetic leg, so it must've been hard to make it out of the forest trails. The first time they had gotten here, Lucius carried him on his back throughout the woods. He had been able to maneuver his prosthetic leg fine, but...

Lucius choked on the smoke from his cigarette.

Why am I worried? He was annoying anyway.

"Please?" Natalia pleaded, planting her palms together. "Can you please call him?"

Lucius reached for his cellphone; he wasn't doing it because he cared, he was doing it because Natalia asked him too.
