Mackenzie's POV

I sprint through the tunnel as fast as I can while trying to control my emotions so my powers don't go out of control. I can't run down the hall looking different than I usually do. People will get confused and I could get in trouble. As I run, I pull out my wand and cast reducio on the candy so I can stick them into my pocket so then if I need to shift into my Animagus I can. I can't let Filch find me. Even though he knows who I am and he likes me because I am nice to him whenever I am here. Okay, calm down Mack, you are fine. Oh who am I kidding, I can feel my nerves going crazy. Mum always said I will feel electricity when I meet my mate but Remus can't be it. I need to find Lily.

Partway through the tunnel, I collapse on the floor as my vision goes black.

"Mum! Look at all the stars, they're so beautiful!" I squeal.

"You're right darling, they're absolutely stunning," my mum replies as she lounges on the lawn with me and Professor Dumbledore.  Every year on the first night I get to Hogwarts for the summer we come out on the lawn and look at the beautiful stars.

"Mummy, why is there a tree over here? There never was before." I'm only 4 years old and Mum is so stunned at my intelligence.

"Ahh yes," Professor Dumbledore responds, "We had to add a tree here for a young boy who will be coming to school in several years.  It is a very special tree for a very special child."

"Oh okay, can I go near it? It's very pretty!" I run towards the tree, my long braids and sundress flowing behind me as I run down the hill.

"Mackenzie stop running towards it," Mum shouts.

"Why mummy?" I ask, turning back to look at her.

"Woah!!" I shout as I trip and tumble down towards the tree.

"NO!" Mum screams as Professor pulls out his wand and yells "immobulus".

I turn and look up and see the tree looming over me.  I start to stand up and step away from the branches. "Professor, what is this tree?"

"It's a whomping willow, my dear," he replies.

"Oh." I start to walk up the hill when a large howl pierces through the air.

"Mackenzie! Run!" My mum screams.

I look back and see a tunnel forming underneath the tree.  I slowly take steps back, away from whatever is making that noise in the tunnel.

SNAP

I freeze. I look down and see a broken branch under my foot.  A loud growl echoes on the ground as the creature tumbles out of the tunnel.  I turn and run away from the creature coming after me.  "Mummy! HELP!!!" I scream as loud as I can.  I hear them shouting out spells but they all miss the creature.  And then the creature is upon me.  I'm tackled to the ground as its claws tear through my shoulder and back. "MUM!!" I turn back and look at the creature.  Our eyes lock and immediately the creature stops attacking.  It starts whining and moves away from me.  It sits on the ground, scratching and pushing its nose into the ground.  It sounds upset, maybe, I don't know. Black is entering my sight, so maybe I'm making that up.  I feel really confused.  And then I'm hearing my mum come over and whisper to me, my eyes shut.

"Darling, wake up please. You've been asleep for so long. I need to know you are okay."

"She's going to be okay Minerva. Let her sleep off the shock of what happened. Then we can explain it all to her."

"I still don't understand. Will she be able to have a normal life?"

"Of course she will, the only thing that could happen would be nightmares but that is normal for this sort of experience."

My eyes start to open as their voices pull me out from my sleep. "Mum?" I whisper, my tired eyes searching for her in the room. "Am I in my bedroom?"

My mum rushes over to my bedside. "Yes darling you are. We thought it would be more comfortable for you to be here than in the hospital wing."

"Right, that makes sense," I mumble. "What happened? What was that creature?"

"Ahh, well, you see dear, that was a werewolf that attacked last night. That tunnel leads to a secret place where we allowed that werewolf to shift. That was his first time there and we are going to change the tunnel so he can't get out again during a full moon," Professor Dumbledore informs me.

"The werewolf was a boy?" I ask.

"Yes, he's only 4. He is a lot like you," mum whispers. "He's very brilliant for his age and he is a sweet boy who had a terrible thing happen to him."

"Oh." I pause to think for a second. If he is a werewolf why did he stop attacking me. Usually they don't stop when they start attacking. "Why did he stop attacking me?" I ask.

"That's the tough part Mackenzie," mum says softly. "You know how when you get married to someone, they can be called your soulmate or your mate."

"Yes, they are destined to be with you," I add on.

"He is your soulmate Mackenzie, your mate. That's why he stopped attacking. His wolf recognized that you are his mate when you looked at him and he instantly stopped because he realized he was hurting you."

"Who is he?" I ask.

"We cannot tell you that. You will have to wait until you meet him again later on in life," Professor Dumbledore tells me.

"But how will I know?"

"It is said to feel like a warm flow of energy that zaps through you. Like a lightning bolt, but much stronger," mum says with a smile.

A noise from down the tunnel pulls me out of the daze. I pick myself off the ground and stumble towards the entrance. I climb up the entrance to the tunnel and when I emerge from the statue I shift into my kitten form so I can run without getting in trouble. I look down at my paws and see that they are midnight black. Great, my powers are already out of control. I run up to the Gryffindor tower and hope to shift just long enough to say the password but I don't shift back.
