Parents? What?

I have a mom and dad, ya know? So does my best friend in England (mom and former step dad, but she has them). My irl bff at school is adopted, doesn't know her legit dad, but she has one and a mom who love her a lot. I have two friends where their parents divorced; one sister is with mom, the other with dad.

My point?

Most of us in real life have parents that are involved with us. Mostly because many of us 22 and younger live with them, only gone once we have money for our own place (and graduate from college and get a job... 😂).

Why do many underage Wattpad MCs not have parents in their lives? Or why do they have parents that are almost nonexistent in the house?

This is a huge trend on Wattpad, mainly in fan fiction from what I've seen.

I get that some of you may write stories of kids in boarding school or living somewhere else than home, but that doesn't justify ignoring the parents of your MC. You'd think they'd text or give their parents a call everyday to once a week to let them know what's going on.

And stop with the orphans... There's too many on here. Not only in fan fiction, but fiction in general!

Not every hero needs to be an orphan. They don't need some damn angst-filled past.

Make stories realistic! Put more parents in them! And don't make them invisible!

Oh... Wait.

I'm not done yet.

I need to bring up the carefree parent who is seen in almost every boy band fic ever.

Queue story mode:

"Hey, mom. I was wondering if I could go on tour with ---? I'll be gone the entire school year!"

"Oh, that's fine!" Her mom waved it off."Have fun! And use condoms!"

My mother is so embarrassing...

Aaaaaand... End.

See what I mean? This is annoying and way too repetitive in books! Just stop it already!

No parent is that laid back! I know my parents would yell at me if I didn't tell them I was going outside just to use my swing set or draw. They'd be upset not knowing where I was at. They also don't even like me inviting male friends over, even if he's gay and wouldn't make a move on me. 😑 Oh, and my mom does anything she can to make me go to school, no matter how miserable I feel.

I know not all parents are strict (like mine above), but they're not as laid back as what I showed in my example! Make parents more realistic!

Give them some condescending attitude towards their kid. Make them be persistent about homework. Maybe they make the MC do the dishes every night.

Just stop with the nonexistent and extreme laid back parents!
