Lan Wangji's eyes snapped open.

His gaze fixated on Wei Wuxian's bewitching, enchanting, mesmerizing beauty as she went deeper into the cave. Her slender body shivered not only with cold but also joy, excitement, wonder and curiosity as her gaze travelled around, wanting to uncover the secrets hidden in every stone, every drop of water of the sacred cold pond cave.

Only after Wei Wuxian's figure was out of sight did Lan Wangji release his shaky breath, slowly, and turned his head to sit straight across Elder Lan Yi and apologised.

"Since when were you listening and watching us, child?"

"I ..never froze"

"How?"

"Don't know. Never worked on me ..and Xiongzhang"

Lan Yi sighed, "That means you heard everything and even saw her real appearance. Right?"

"Mn" Lan Wangji answered, dazedly, his mind replaying every scene, every single word Wei Wuxian said a while back like a movie. He felt overwhelmed. Happiness, doubts, fear, uncertainties, extreme attraction and unhealthy thoughts, his feelings were becoming so so tangled that it brought tears to his eyes.

Noticing Elder Lan Yi's gaze at him, he blinked away his tears and asked, "Elder Lan Yi, May I know when did you know I wasn't frozen?"

"You frowned and looked agitated when A'ying was telling about those cultivators in white. I assume that you know something, don't you?"

Lan Wangji's eyes filled with regret, "I'm that boy who gave her the rattle drum."

"I see. Then, why did you leave her like that?"

"I..I was scared. When I saw her, I felt a connection, a strange pull, an undeniably strong attraction and it..terrified me. Those feelings filled me with extreme fear, fear of losing her just like I lost my...mother. And so I.."

"Ran away," Lan Yi completed for Lan Wangji, understanding the need of a child who wanted to run away from all the attachments, emotions and feelings to protect his heart from getting hurt again.

"A'ying doesn't know that you like her, does she?"

Lan Wangji was caught off-guard. Ear tips burning red with unsaid emotions, he shook his head slowly.

"She also doesn't know the meaning of our forehead ribbon?"

Lan Wangji sighed, "No"

"And now, she doesn't even know that you know her truth. What are you going to do?"

"Stay by her side and protect her"

"Don't you think you should tell her the truth? That you know everything?"

"I will, after she tells me the truth herself. I want to win her trust."

Lan Yi smiled mysteriously, "Life is full of uncertainties and opportunities. What is right today, will be wrong tomorrow. What we see as black will soon be white. One moment we have everything and next, nothing. There's no such thing as the right time, wrong is only a matter of perception."

"Elder A'yi! I found your sword!" Wei Wuxian chirped, entering the cave hall happily. Her gaze fell upon Lan Zhan, sitting still, with his eyes closed.

"Elder A'yi, when will you unfreeze Lan er gege?"

"Very soon," Lan Yi said, taking her sword from Wei Wuxian's hand, "Once I unfreeze him, even if you can't see your illusion here, you know that it's visible to those whom you haven't told the truth, right?"
