We all walked right up to the beanstalk. It didn't look very easy to climb...or very fun.
"Little freakier than I remember from the story," Emma said.
"Reminds me of death," Mulan replied.
"Encouraging," Mary Margaret commented.
"Well, your compass awaits," Hook said. "Shall we?"
"Wait," Emma said. "If these beans create...portals, why not just pick one and go home? Why the compass?"
"Because there aren't any more beans," I said. "Whatever story you think you know, it's probably wrong."
"There was a guy named Jack," Emma said, "some kind of cow, and something about evil giants with a treasure and a golden goose. Or harp."
"Sounds like a lovely tale," Hook said. "But the truth's a little bit more gruesome. The giants grew the beans, but rather than use them for good, they used them to plunder all the lands. Jack and his men fought a terrible war, defeating all but one of the evil giants. The beans were destroyed by the giants as they died. If they couldn't have the magic, then nobody could. Certainly very bad form."
I rolled my eyes. All the times he liked to say Bad Form, Good Form, whatever.
"Evil giants who made magic portal beans. Why doesn't anyone just go up and grow some more?"
"Because one giant survived," Hook replied. "The strongest and most terrible of them all. Now we'll have to get past him to..."
"The magic compass," Mary Margaret finished.
"Indeed. The treasure remains, amongst it is the compass. Now it will guide us to your land. Cora has the means to open a portal with the wardrobe ashes, but without the compass, she can't find your land. Once we get it, we steal the ashes from her? And then we're on our way."
"How do we know you're not just using us to get the compass for Cora?" Mulan asked.
"Because you five are far safer company. All I need is a ride back, I'll swear allegiance to whomever gets me there first."
"Then we better start climbing," I said.
"Right," Hook said, "so, I failed to mention that the giant enchanted the beanstalk to repel intruders."
"All right, so how do we get up there?" Emma asked.
"I've got a counter spell from Cora, if you'd be so kind," he said, holding out his still bound hands. Well, hand. Mary Margaret untied them, glaring at him the whole time.
"Thank you, m'lady," Hook said, winking at Mary Margaret. He put one of the bracelets on his arm, and it glowed gold.
"I've got two more of these. Cora was to accompany me, and we were going to bring the giant down. Shrunk, of course. So, which two of you five lovelies shall take her place? Go on, fight it out. And don't be afraid to, you know, really get into it."

So after five minutes of debating who was the best...well, they were still debating.
"All due respect," Mulan said. "I am the best equipped to go. How many wars have you been through?" She asked Mary Margaret.
"My share," Mary Margaret replied.
"It should be me," Aurora said.
"You? You haven't fought in a battle!"
"This is about us getting home to our loved ones. Why would you..."
"I have no loved ones," Aurora replied. "If I fail, you can still go on."
"It's me," Emma said. "I'm going and I'm not going to fail. Ashton's coming along too because she knows the way and she knows Hook. We are the best to do this."
"You're new here," Mary Margaret replied.
"It's about getting back to Henry. I don't care what I have to face. You're not gonna argue with me?"
"Will it do any good?"
"No."
Mary Margaret nodded unhappily.
"You got anything in that bag that's gonna help me with a giant?" Emma asked.
"Or Hook?"
"Hey!" Hook protested.
Mulan leaned in close so Hook could not hear. "Here. This is a dust made from poppies. He has to inhale it. If he does, instant deep sleep. Should keep him out for a while."
"How strong is your sword?" Emma asked.
"Strongest in all of the realms. Why?"
"Is it strong enough to cut through that beanstalk?"
"Indeed."
"Give us ten hours. If we're not back, you cut it down and keep going."
"Snow won't like that," Mulan replied.
"That's why she's asking you," I said.
"If I don't get back," Emma said. "You get her home."
Mulan nodded, and we headed back over to the group.
"Ladies," Hook said, "in this world we are slaves to time. And ours is running out. In other words, tick-tock."
Emma walked over and held up her arm for Hook to put the band on it.
"I was hoping it would be you," he said.
"God," I said. "Just give us the bracelets."
"Put your hand right here," he said to Emma, placing her hand on his shoulder. "That's a good girl." He smiled. "This will allow you to climb, but there are other dangers. Thankfully you've got me to protect you." He held up his right arm. His hook had not been gives back to him yet. And for good reason too. Who would trust a flirting pirate? Emma smirked, giving him a look like 'dream on.'
"I can't climb one handed, can I?"
She took his hook out of the bag.
"Don't think I'm taking my eyes off you for a second."
"I would despair if you did."
"Alright," I said, "let's go."
All three of us walked to the beanstalk and began climbing.
