Remember the day I borrowed your new car and dented it?

"I promise I won't leave a scratch!" I said pleadingly to Dan.

"Phil." Dan sighed.

I pouted at Dan, making him huff in annoyance.

"Okay fine, I give in. Only because you're so cute." Dan said quietly, a light blush rising to his cheeks.

"Thanks." I grinned happily, taking his keys.

I thought you'd kill me,

"I-I-I'm so s-sorry! I-I didn't know, I mean t-the tree, I thought it w-was further away, please don't h-hate me! I-I-"

But you didn't.

"Phil, honestly it's fine! It's not like I would hate you over a stupid car! Stop worrying beautiful." Dan said soothingly, hugging me tightly.

Remember that day I vomited strawberry pie all over your new carpet?

"I knew you were lying about not being sick." Dan sighed.

I hicupped quietly as tears streamed down my face. "I-I'm sorry..."

"Lion." Dan sighed.

I thought you'd hate me,

"I-I'll help clean up!" I weeped, running to the kitchen but unsteadily stopping at the sink, feeling light-headed.

"I'll help you, I promise." I said under my breath to Dan who was now hugging me from behind.

But you didn't.

"That carpet wasn't nice anyway." Dan smiled, stroking my hair soothingly. "Let's get you to bed my precious lion."

I sniffed, simply nodding with a smile.

Remember that day I dragged you to the beach and it really was raining as you said it would?

"See Dan? It's nice weather today! No rain!" I declared, shortly followed by a rumble from the sky as the first few raindrops startrd to fall.

I turned to Dan, biting my lip anxiously.

I thought you'd say 'I told you so',

Dan laughed, taking off his coat and placing it over my shoulders as he led us to the nearest shelter.

"I'm sorry. I didn't know..."

"It's only rain. A little bit of water never hurt anyone. Besides, people say i'm dripping with good looks."

I grinned widely. "Wanna hear another pun?"

"Of course!" Dan said excitedly.

"Well, one time I tried to grab fog...but I mist."

"......"

"......"

"Mine was funnier Phil. Nice try though."

Remember that day I flirted with all the guys to make you jealous, and you really did get jealous?

I quickly looked behind me to see if Dan was looking. Once again, he was but didn't seem phased.

That was until I felt a smll tug at my hand, soon being led to another part of a room by an unrecognisable face. They smiled, leaning in for a kiss and that's when I knew I took this too far.

I felt another hand yank me out of his clutches, pulling me out of the venue, looking up to see Dan with a small pout on his face.

I thought you'd leave me,

".....I'm sorry...." I said quietly, hugging Dan quickly so that he couldn't escape my clutch yet.

But you didn't.

Dan hugged back with just as much force. "Please don't ever leave me Phil."

"I won't."

Remember that day I forgot to tell you the dance was formal wear and you ended up wearing jeans?

I shifted uncomfortably, staring at the floor in guilt. Music roared through the room as almost everybody danced with their fancy dresses an dashing suits. Except for me and Dan.

I thought you'd abandon me,

I didn't know, I thought he knew it was formal.

It was all my fault.

But you didn't.

I felt a warm hand clutch onto mine, intertwining our fingers abd I knew it was Dan. I looked up at him and he smiled back.

"Phil you dimwit." Dan laughed fondly. "Now come on, let's dance.

Yes there were a lot of things you didn't do.

"I'm sorry I left the cupboard door open again."

"I'm sorry I ate all your cereal."

"I'm sorry I stepped on your charger."

But you put up with me,

"It's fine. Don't worry lion."

Loved me,

"I love you too much to care lion."

Protected me,

"Never let those trolls bother you again. They are just jealous of your good looks and beautiful personality, okay Phil?"

There were a lot of things I wanted to make up to you,

I had planned for us to go ice skating.

Eat at a fancy resturant.

Stargazing.

When you returned from Vietnam,

When I hugged you goodbye, I knew for sure you were coming back because you were only medical help for the soldiers.

I didn't worry too much.

But you didn't.

A/N:

The author of the poem was an ordanairy American woman, whose husband was drafted into the army and went to the battlefield of Vietnam whem their daughter was four years old. From that point on, she and her daughter only had eachother.

Later, her husband unfortunately died on battlefield and she was widowed until she died of old age.

When her daughter was organising her remains, she discovered this poem her mother had written to her father back then, titled "But You Didn't".

I hope she's resting in peace with her husband.
