As Varian settles into the bedroom, the other guys enter the room. Eugene is the last to come in, and he begins to explore cheerily. He opens a cabinet full of towels and washcloths, but groans in annoyance when he sees Shorty sitting in a chair and making a mess of the yam he is eating.
"Here Shorty, at least wipe your face," Eugene says, throwing a towel at the old man.
"Not my style," Shorty says, tossing the towel onto the floor and continuing to munch on his yam.
As the guys check out the room, Varian can hear the voices of the girls talking to each other in the next room. He wonders if they should really be splitting up like this. "Something's not right," he says.
"What'd you mean?" Lance asks.
"I mean, why is this huge place just sitting here in the middle of nowhere?" Varian says. "And that Matthews guy... There's something off about him."
"Ah, he's just eccentric," Eugene says, grabbing another towel for himself. "Don't be so judgmental."
"I-I'm not being judgmental!" Varian says. "I just get a weird feeling around him. What kind of person just takes us in, offers us food and a place to stay for the night, without asking for any money?"
Lance seems to be pondering what Varian is saying, but Eugene doesn't seem bothered at all. "You worry too much, kid. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth!"
"I'm telling you, it just doesn't make sense!" Varian continues.
"Okay sure, it's weird," Eugene finally admits. "But you gotta admit, this isn't the weirdest thing we've seen on the road."
A knock on the door interrupts their conversation. Eugene opens it to find Matthews, who tells them, "Supper has been prepared for you in the dining hall."
As Eugene and Lance rush out eagerly, Varian notices that Shorty seems to be missing. He figures the old man must have finished his yam, and decided to head to the dining hall early. He and the other guys stop in to get the girls, and then they all head down the stairs together.
Down in the dining hall, Varian is amazed at the huge spread of food in front of them. They all sit down, and begin to eat the different selections merrily.
"Come on, would you put that thing down?!" Cassandra shouts.
Varian glances up from his plate to see that Eugene is wielding a butterknife high into the air. "And why would I?" Eugene says. "You never put your sword down."
Before anyone can say anything more, Shorty enters the room. He hops up into a chair, quiet and composed. He pulls out a napkin, places it in his lap, gently grabs the silverware from the table, and begins eating his food like a well-mannered gentleman. He even wipes his face with the napkin after taking a bite. The gang all exchange confused glances and stare at him, dumbfounded.
