Cassandra's words ring in Varian's ears. "Wha-What are you saying?"
"You understand more than anyone else what it's like to be snubbed by her," Cassandra replies, pointing at Rapunzel. "Plus, you've always had my back, even when I didn't have yours. I could use someone like you around while I'm..." The end of her sentence trails off, but Varian still understands.
And, he stops to think about it. Why, though? Why is he actually thinking about it?! His mind goes back to when Rapunzel lost her memory, how Cass attempted to hide it from her, and he went along with it even though he knew what Cass was doing was wrong...
Is he going to do that again?
Cassandra notices how conflicted he is. "Think about it, Rapunzel has made it evident that she still has her doubts about you. Do you really think she'll ever totally trust you?"
"I..." Varian doesn't know what to say. He has been wondering that exact same thing, in the back of his mind...
"Cass! This has to stop now," Rapunzel says, coming up next to Varian. She is completely unaware of the conversation she has interrupted. "Whatever you're going through, you and me can fix it together like we always have!"

But this only angers Cassandra further. "No! What has to stop is you thinking you're my friend, but not even hearing how condescending you are like you've always been!"
"Please, just listen to me," Rapunzel says.
"I'm listening," Cassandra says with irritation.
"I... I know it can't be true that you actually want to do something like this," Rapunzel says. "Please, just look into my eyes... I know you feel it."
Cassandra sighs, and she actually seems like she might be coming around. "Maybe..."
"It's not too late, you know!" Rapunzel continues. "So before another line gets crossed and we lose everything we have... just wait."
A sudden new darkness crosses Cassandra's face, giving Varian chills. Is it horrible that he finds this new Cass both terrifying and extremely attractive?
"Wait?" Cassandra repeats, The opal's energy crackling around her again. "No, I won't wait!" She manifests a cage of black rocks to encircle Rapunzel, and then turns returns her gaze to Varian. "What's it gonna be, kid?"
