The loud knock on the front door startled Ashton awake. He sat up and looked around the room, his eyes falling onto the clock on the bedroom wall to find that it was nearing two in the morning. He groaned and buried his head in his hands before the knocking came again, this time much harder than before.
At the same time, his phone began to vibrate on the nightstand. He saw your name on the screen and quickly answered it and when he heard you sniffle his heart began to hammer against his chest as a wave of anxiety washed over him.
"Y/N? Everything okay, baby?"
"N-No." You whimpered. "Please let me in."
He jumped out of bed and rushed down the stairs. Only when he opened the front door and you were throwing your arms around him did he end the call, knowing that you were safe in his embrace now.
"Hey," he whispered softly and closed the front door before his hand fell to your back. "It's okay. Tell me what happened. What's got you so shaken up?" He asked and then felt his heart shatter in his chest when you gazed up at him with teary eyes.
"There's so much fighting between my family right now. I couldn't sleep. They just keep shouting at each other. I got scared." You explained as he rubbed your back soothingly.
"Okay. C'mon. You're cold. I'll make you something to drink and we'll go up to my room and talk things out." He said and softly stroked your cheek in comfort, hoping his soft voice and sweet promises to be here for you through it all would be enough to make you feel better, even if it was just a little.
And he knew he succeeded when you nodded with a tiny smile on your face. He made you some tea before getting you up to his bed, where you sat at the edge of his bed and hung your head in sadness as everything came back to you.
He sat beside you before pulling you into his arms. You put your head against his shoulder and sniffled.
"Tell me everything. I'm here for you." He whispered and started to rub your back.
"Think my parents are falling out of love." You whispered. "They just keep fighting. One small thing sets them off. I walk on eggshells all the time, worrying that I'll upset them."
He kissed your shoulder softly as you spoke, wanting you to know he was listening to every word and that he cares so deeply without interrupting you.
"I don't know what to do anymore. It's just too much. I don't want to see them or hear them act like this anymore. They say the most hurtful things to each other, cursing each other out and wishing the other didn't even exist and fight until the early hours of the morning. They're either at each other's throats or it's so silent that it suffocates me."
He tightened his arms around you. His heart was shattering in his chest, breaking into thousands of tiny pieces as he felt you fall apart as you cried and poured out your every worry and fear to him.
"I just can't take it anymore, Ash."
"You don't have to." He spoke, his lips traveling from your shoulder and to your ear as he held you a little tighter. "I know it's bad. You've told me before. But I think it's just too much on you. I know you love your parents. I know you love your family. You're wonderful like that; always loving others so deeply. But, I think you need to walk away. You're an adult, you have the option to walk whenever you're ready for your feet to carry you out that door for good."
You cried, tears running down your cheeks.
"They have to work things out themselves. You have to focus on yourself. If your family is fighting that much and this badly, that you rush to my house and two in the morning and you're pounding on my door and sobbing, it's time to go."
You too a shaky breath before turning around to face him.
"Where do I go?"
"Here." He said and you nodded slowly. "Hey," he whispered and put his fingers under your chin to lift it when you lowered your head in sadness once more. "Let's not worry about anything right now. We'll talk more in the morning about things of that sort. For now, let's get you all calmed down. You'll stay right here with me tonight and I'll hold you the entire night, won't let you go even once."
You chuckled tearfully, finding comfort in him promising to keep you safe and warm all night long.
"Okay." You whispered and gave him a soft kiss before lying down.
Your tears continued to fall, his hand brushed all along your back. You sipped on the warm drink until it turned cold. Even then, you still shed a tear, afraid that your entire family was just falling apart right in front of your eyes. You found comfort in his heartbeat and his soft voice in your ear, whispering sweet and loving words and promises as he held you securely in his arms.
You were wide awake until the time hit five am. You then felt yourself wearing out of energy and running out of tears to cry. Your eyes grew heavy and Ashton watched you close them as he tucked you in under his warm blanket with a kiss to your head.
"You know I've always got you. I'm always here to keep you safe. We'll work through it all together. But, just know that I'm never leaving you. I know you probably fear that'll be us someday, but I swear that I'll never let that happen. I love you, always will." He promised as you drifted off to sleep, watching you smile a little.
"I love you." You whispered and held him a little tighter.
"I love you more. Everything is gonna be just fine. I promise." He spoke and kissed your head.
He never breaks his promises to you.
Everything was gonna be okay.
He wouldn't ever let you go.
