"Ms. Campbell? Ms. Campbell?"
Iris immediately snapped back to reality, "Yes, sorry. My apologies."
Shoupe sat in front of her with a sigh, glancing at the SBI guy beside him, "You went with Rafe to the airstrip. What happened next?"
"He got ahold of Ward's gun. He told me to stay in the truck. He left. I got out and ran after him. And I saw Sarah and John B and Ward at the airstrip and then um, um, the Sheriff pulled up. And she tried to, she arrested Ward or yeah, something like that, uh-"
"Take a breath, Iris."
She let out a deep breath, "And then he shot her to save him."
"Who did?"
"Rafe." Her voice was barely a whisper.
Holy fuck.
She did it.
She turned him in.
The guy she loved. The guy she wanted to spend forever with.
What the hell was she thinking?
The two men exchanged looks, "Did Ward make you come down here and say all of this?"
She met their eyes, "What? No."
"Iris-"
"He didn't." She said frantically shaking her head.
Sighing, he nodded, "Okay, then what happened next?"
"I tried to help her. I tried my best but Ward, he, he didn't want her to be saved. Everyone was freaking out and he told Rafe to bring Sarah and I home. And we did."
Now, here's the thing. Because of Lily, they already had their sights on Ward. And because they knew Rafe, they didn't think he was capable of this, which clouded their judgement. So what does that mean? They think that Iris confessed because Ward told her to. That Ward made her confess that it was Rafe and not Ward himself because, as they knew, the was extremely fucking powerful. And he would 100% throw his son under the bus before turning himself in.
So, they took Iris' statement. But they had a plan. Arrest Rafe but going after Ward was the main end goal.
