When I woke up, birds were already chirping outside and I could feel the cold air rushing through the window. The room was empty though, not a single soul was there... apart from my own.
"Tahnée?" No answer. I stood up, walking over to her window to close it and see if the weather was great for this Christmas. But to my surprise, the bright skies were grey to me and the cloudless air was packed and cloudy. I saw her with Brian on the hanging chair by the pool. Her head rested upon his shoulder and his hand holding on to her hers.
I told myself that I'll be alright with this, it is in fact her happiness and not mine. But the sinking feeling of my heart gave me the sense of mind that I'm actually not doing okay...
I sighed, walking away from the window for I cannot look at it any longer. Feeling the sour and bitter taste in my mouth of he words I once spoke, letting her go and telling her to move on.
Stumping down the stairs to the kitchen where I saw her mother. "Morning Katherine." I rubbed my hands over my eyes as I tried to look more awake. "Evans." She smiled over to me. Mom number two.
She's amazing.
"Where's the rest of the crew?" I just sighed, nodding my head to the direction of the back doorway. "Outside." "This early?" I nodded. She could sense it. My sadness, confusion and broken-hearted attitude. "How are you?" She sat down beside me, sliding the cup of freshly brewed coffee over to my side. Better than in Canada. No one makes a meaner cup of coffee than the one and only Katherine Summers. "I thought I'd be okay. But I guess not." She knows about my feelings for Tahnée. God, she even knows about the kiss. "It takes a bit more time Micheal."
"Yeah. I guess it does."-
The day went on. The two lovebirds went out for breakfast and surprisingly invited me along. "I don't want to interfere." Tahnée looked at me with a smile, "You won't. Please come with us." I saw Brian then just walking out of the room, coming downstairs. "You guys should enjoy breakfast." "You aren't coming with us?" He asked.
This day is full of surprises I guess. "No. I uh- I have some errands to run before tonight."
"You sure?" Tahnée asked again. "I'm dead sure. Now go." She kissed my cheek, gave me one more hug and walked off with Brian to the restaurants nearby. She looks so beautiful walking away, I just wish it was my hand holding hers and not his.

Tahnée told me all about her home, school years and friends as we walked to her favorite coffee shop just upstream. "Do they have honeycomb lattes?" I asked all excited, hearing her laughter filling my ears. "Sadly, no. But they do have salted caramel?" She said more like a question. "I guess that'll have to do." I chuckled, holding the door to the cafe open for her and we walked in.
-
"Tahnée, I'm feeling kind of weird with Micheal."
"What do you mean?" She pulled her knife and fork out of the folded napkin before digging in to her meal. "He's acting strange with me around, especially after eavesdropping on our conversation from last night."
"True." She stated.
I just looked at her with eyebrows raised, waiting for a better answer from her than just admitting on to my statement. "Tahnée?" I chuckled. "What do you want me to say?" She laughed."I don't know... that you'll protect me from his weird stares and glares, you know hold me— keep me closured and safe when we're around him." She cracked up, making me smile and my heart warmed up by the sight of her happiness.
"Okay," she placed her hand in mine, "I'll protect you from Micheal's stink eyes and stares. I'll keep my arms around you for closure and safety if—" She emphasizes the word 'if' looking at me with a small smirk in the corner of her lips. "If you promise me to find a mistletoe before midnight tonight." I felt my cheeks burning as she softly spoke the request. "I promise." I smiled uncontrollably.
We finished our meals and ordered another round of salted caramel lattes to finish up on stories and laughters. "This was great." She slid her hand down my arm in to the palm and intertwined our fingers. Thanking me for the morning as we made our walk back to her house. "Thank you." I planted a kiss on the top of her head.
In the distance I spotted the park just a curve fown from their street. "Follow me." "Oh so you know your way around town now?"
"No. I just know my way to the park." She rolled her eyes before grinning a devilish grin. "Race you." She shook her hand out of mine before running towards the park."That's unfair. You had a headstart." She slowed down a bit till we were aligned and yet... she still ran dust in to my eyes.
"How the hell?" I panted as I reached her by the gate. "Class of twenty-seventeen's home athletics team." She smiled. "That's explains your explicit calves." I pointed out, making her laugh. "Common." She grabbed me by the hand to pull me along. "No no hold up, I need to catch my breath." I reached for the railing but she grabbed my hands again and pulled me with her.
More runninng. We ended up by a small swing set, looking out over some fall coloured trees and the fountain roght in the middle of it all. "This was my spot." She started talking. "Everyday after school I would head home, do my homework and catch up with my parents before taking the run to the park. I'd sit here on the swing and watch over the fountain. Seeing every possible couple you can see tossing a coin in to the water, sharing a kiss and then walking off." She paused.
"I always wondered why they did it. What could they possibly had wished for as a couple? Maybe years of love and friendship? Maybe marriage?"I looked over to her, "What would you wish for?"
"Me?" She sighed, "Gosh I don't know. I believe if you have a relationship with someone you're happy so why wish for something you already have? I guess I'd wish for..." she thought for a while. She is so scientific over things. Seeing the bigger part of it all, digging deeper in to unknowingly things and makes this big thing out of something so small. Her mind works overtime.
I love it."I'd wish for nothing."
"Oh common."
"Seriously. If I'm there with the one I love, then I have all that I want or ever could want."
"Would you tell him that you love him by then?"
"Trust me Brian, when we're at the stage of tossing a fucking coin in to a fountain... I think I already told the guy I love him."I stood up and held my hand out to her. "What?"
"Come with me." I laughed. She took my hand in hers and walked with me over to the fountain. The shining metal of all the coins sparkling in the sunlight through the water. I pulled out a coin from my pocket and handed it to her.
"Wish for something. Anything."
"This is the couple's fountain?" She tried to stop, trying to hand me the coin back or try and slid it back in to my pocket, but in every way I dodged her actions.
"Well we're breaking the tradition. Make a wish." She looked at me with a grin, rolling her eyes at first but took a stand behind the bricked fountain. Her hand held on to mine as she closed her eyes, held the coin tightly in her hand and... dropped it in to the water. "What did wish for?" I whispered as I stood behind her. My chin on her shoulder. She turned her face to look at me and I saw her smile, "If I tell you it won't come true." "Fair enough." As she turned around our eyes were centimeters away from one another's. Lips even closer. She leaned closer, really slow. But this time I dodged the kiss, making her peck my cheek instead. "What the hell?" She looked all surprised.
"Save it for the mistletoe." I whispered.
