Significance of Goddess Shailaputri – Navratri Day 1
Shailaputri literally means “Daughter of the Mountains” and she is a manifestation of Goddess Durga and is worshipped on the first day of Navratri. She is also known as Sati, Bhavani, Parvati or Hemavati.
Goddess Shailaputri is depicted with two hands and has a crescent moon on her forehead. She holds a trident in her right hand and a lotus flower in the left. She rides on mount Nandi (bull).
In previous birth, as the daughter of Daksha, Sati burnt herself in the fire of Yagna because Daksha insulted Lord Shiva and Sati could not tolerate the insult of her husband.
In her next birth, she became the daughter of Himalaya in the name of Parvati – Hemavati and got married to Shiva.
She is Devi of the root chakra, who, upon awakening, begins Her journey upwards. Sitting on Nandi and making her first journey from the Muladhara chakra. The goal of every yogi is to keep the attention concentrated on the Muladhara chakra on the first day of Navratri so that they can experience the bliss of the upward journey of the energy as the days progress during Navratri.
The Mantra to honor this form of Goddess Durga as Shailaputri is “Aum Hreem Shri Shailaputri Durgaaye Namaha”. Chant this mantra 108 times today.

ஷைலபுத்ரி என்றால் "மலைகளின் மகள்" என்று பொருள்படும், அவள் துர்கா தேவியின் வெளிப்பாடு மற்றும் நவராத்திரியின் முதல் நாளில் வழிபடப்படுகிறாள். அவள் சதி, பவானி, பார்வதி அல்லது ஹேமாவதி என்றும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறாள்.
ஷைலபுத்ரி தேவி இரண்டு கைகளுடன் சித்தரிக்கப்படுகிறாள் மற்றும் அவள் நெற்றியில் பிறை சந்திரனைக் கொண்டிருக்கிறாள். வலது கையில் திரிசூலமும், இடது கையில் தாமரை மலரும் ஏந்தியவள். அவள் நந்தி மலையில் (காளை) சவாரி செய்கிறாள்.
முந்தைய பிறவியில், தக்ஷனின் மகளாக, தக்ஷன் சிவனை அவமதித்ததால், சதி தன் கணவனின் அவமானத்தை பொறுத்துக்கொள்ள முடியாமல் யாக நெருப்பில் தன்னை எரித்துக் கொண்டாள்.
அடுத்த பிறவியில், அவள் பார்வதி - ஹேமாவதி என்ற பெயரில் இமயமலையின் மகளாக மாறி, சிவனை மணந்தாள்.
அவள் மூல சக்கரத்தின் தேவி, அவள் விழித்தவுடன், மேல்நோக்கி தனது பயணத்தைத் தொடங்குகிறாள். நந்தியின் மீது அமர்ந்து மூலாதார சக்கரத்தில் இருந்து தனது முதல் பயணத்தை மேற்கொள்கிறார். ஒவ்வொரு யோகியின் குறிக்கோளும் நவராத்திரியின் முதல் நாளில் மூலாதார சக்கரத்தின் மீது கவனத்தை ஒருமுகப்படுத்துவதாகும், இதனால் நவராத்திரியின் போது நாட்கள் முன்னேறும்போது ஆற்றலின் மேல்நோக்கிய பயணத்தின் பேரின்பத்தை அனுபவிக்க முடியும்.
துர்கா தேவியின் இந்த வடிவத்தை ஷைலபுத்ரி என்று போற்றுவதற்கான மந்திரம் "ஓம் ஹ்ரீம் ஸ்ரீ ஷைலபுத்ரி துர்காயே நமஹ". இந்த மந்திரத்தை இன்று 108 முறை ஜபிக்கவும்.
