last month, i got into seventeen. i really enjoy their music and i love all thirteen members. they're wonderful and they make me very happy.
one day, my dad was driving me to school. my phone was connected with the aux cord. i played seventeen's "박수 (clap)" from youtube because i didn't have the song on my phone yet. the conversation went like this:
me: tea can play this song on the guitar y'know?
dad: really? that's great.
me: yep!
dad: can you play it on bass?
me: ... i haven't looked for the tabs.
dad: why would you need them? you should he able to just hear it and play it.
me: dad, that's not how it goes for most people. besides, i've been playing for less than a year.
dad: well if i show this song to *family friend*, he'd be able to play it on at least three instruments after one listen.
me: dad, most of my classmates have been going to music school all their lives and they can't do that.
dad: yeah, right *rolls eyes*
me: ...
dad: until you can do that, you're not a musician at all. you're not a person who can play an instrument.the rest of the conversation was him yelling at me for being a fake musician, being untalented and so on.
basically, my father appears to believe all musicians have absolute pitch. i'm not stupid, i know people with absolute pitch are rare. still, i asked my musically educated classmates if they have absolute pitch and if they know anyone who has it. the answer to both questions was always a certain 'no'.
i got yelled at for not having absolute pitch.
