"Hi there," says a man at the front desk. "Welcome to the County Motel. My name is Dave. Would you like a room?"

He speaks with a slight cowboy-ish accent that only partially annoys me.

I'm not only annoyed because of the accent, but also his chipper attitude. I almost died today; if it were not for the Chimæra in my pocket, I most certainly would have. I'm filthy and tired and frankly don't give enough of a damn for this guy's cheerfulness.

But of course, I'm not going to show it.

"Yes please," I answer. "Just one night."

"That'll be $25," says Dave.

I pull out the banking card from my wallet out of my bag. I've never had a job before; this is money my parents gave me for my college tuition. I feel a little guilty for using it here, but under the circumstances, I don't have much choice.

"Here is your room key," the man says as I put my wallet away. "There's coffee and tea provided. Breakfast first thing in the morning; 6:30 sharp. Enjoy your stay."

He smiles and I return the gesture despite the exhaustion inside.

"Thank you so much," I add.

He nods and I head to the room.
