DESPERATE EFFORTS

Draco

"It's not working!" Hermione snapped, slamming her textbook shut. "I can't do it-I can't find her."

Ginny placed a hand on Hermione's shoulder, trying to ease her. "It's okay, Mione. Just-breath. Take a moment. You have this. You can do it, just stop pressurizing yourself."

Hermione grit her teeth, running a hand down her face. Her frustration seeped through her pores. "How am I supposed to stop pressurizing myself when this spell may very well be our last hope in finding Elysia? Merlin, it's been over two weeks and we have not a clue where she even is! She could be all the way in-Muggle Canada for all we know!"

Hermione had spent every waking moment trying to find a spell that could help us locate Elysia. The tracking spell reveals traces of magic, including footprints and track marks. It was by far, the longest shot we could take. Frankly, none of us had high hopes that this spell would give us a hint of where Elysia may be.

But, we needed to try anyways.

"Granger!" I slammed the palm down on the table, catching her attention along with everyone else's. She stared up at me, eyes growing slightly horrified. "Shut up. If anyone has this, it's you. I hate the fact that I even have to admit that. If it doesn't work, it's not on you. It's a long shot. The only thing we can do is try."

Hermione snapped her mouth shut, slowly nodding her head as she opened her textbook again.

Hermione scanned the page once more before she stood up, stepping away from the desk in Elysia's room.

She pulled out her wand. "Appare Vestigium."

Golden dust spread throughout the room, floating in the air. Hermione followed the swirls of gold that illuminated the room.

"That-" she pointed at gathered particles that were forming an imagine. A figure formed near the window of her room. Tall. Hooded.

"That's him," Pansy exasperated, horror flashing across her eyes. "The fucking monster who took her. Right here. In her fucking room. That shouldn't even be possible."

My blood ran cold.

I was vastly tempted to punch the gold-swirl formed figure standing by the window. How can one kill something that's not even there?

Hermione hushed us all, carefully scanning the room. "Move." She pushed Potter who was standing by the room door aside.

Another figure formed in the golden light.

Pushed against the door. It was Elysia. That night, she backed herself into the room. I could hardly make out her face but I could see her trembling body.
