AFTER THE STORM

Disorientation. Confusion. Pain. Unbalanced.

I was paddling through water, desperately fighting to keep my head above the surface but the waves crashed and fought against me, continuously trying to pull me back under.

My eyelids felt heavy as I blinked my eyes open, adjusting to the brightness. It had been so long since I had seen this much light. My head throbbed with a dull ache, pressure around my eyes.

I groaned as I tried to sit up, my vision slightly blurred. Pain shot through my leg, stabbing its way up my spinal cord. Every moment or so my body would twitch, my hands trembling and spasming from the endless amounts of torture I had taken.

"Hey, hey-don't try to sit right now. Just take it easy."

I blinked a few times, turning to the familiar voice. It had been so long since I heard a comforting voice-a voice that belonged to someone other than Samael.

Impulsively, I reached a hand out to touch his face. "You're really here."

His grey eyes twinkling under the bright lighting in the hospital ward. "I'm here. I'm not going anywhere."

My hand spasmed, causing me to quickly pull it away from his face.

"Elysia-"

"What happened?" I met Draco's beautiful eyes again. They felt like home. "After I was stunned? Where is everyone? My dad-is he okay?"

Draco's eyes were clouded with concern. He was trying to shield his trepidation but I could see the storms swirling within those icy eyes. "Samael died after he tried to use Avada Kedavra on you."

I exhaled sharply.

One of the many, many bricks that were weighing me down seemed to lift. It was so minor that it didn't make me feel any better.

"Everyone else-are they all okay?"

Draco nodded, his eyes briefly glancing to my mouth. Not my lips, rather the cut on the end of my bottom lip that was splitting apart the skin, dried blood warmed on the wound. "They are. Everyone is okay. Neville broke an arm and some are bruised up but nothing critical."

I nodded slowly, taking a deep breath as I turned to look at the ceiling.

It's so warm in here.

I hadn't remember what it felt like to be warm. It felt like such a strange thing.

Exhaustion was pressed down on me like a weighted blanket that was making it difficult to breath. My muscles and bones ached, my eyelids heavy.

I was too terrified to close my eyes. I wasn't sure if I could. I may have to be stunned just to get some sleep.

"Elysia," Draco's voice was delicate as a flower petal, flooding my body with warmth I hadn't felt in what felt like forever. His mere voice was enough to bring me a sense of comfort. I met his eyes. "What did-what did he do to you?"
