AFTERMATH

The following two weeks had been restless-to say the least.

Mara was found guilty on all accounts by Snape. She had been pulled out of Hogwarts and was now sitting in wait to be on trial in front of the Council of Magical Law. Some of us were asked to come in as witnesses and testify against her.

From the looks of it, Mara was going to be sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban. After all she had done, there was nothing that could free her from these repercussions.

I had walked into the library one evening, halting when I saw Enzo sitting at a corner table. His head was lowered as his eyes scanned the written words scrawled across a piece of parchment.

The exhaustion he wore was discernible. The way his shoulders were being drawn down with gravity, the bags under his eyes growing more and more hollow. The strain of life and its burdens was displayed all over the boy's face.

Warily, I walked over to him. "Hey. Is that the Potions essay?"

Enzo's gaze lifted tiredly. "Oh-yeah. It is." He ran a hand down his face as he slunk back in his chair, looking at me. "Have you started it?"

"I have." I pulled out the chair across from him and sat down. "I've only finished half of it."

Enzo glanced down at his parchment. My gaze followed his. He had a mere three lines written; somehow I knew his struggle to complete the essay was from total mental exhaustion and burnout, rather than because the essay itself was a difficult task.

"I, erm-" I reached into my shoulder bag and plucked out a book. I slid it over to Enzo. "This should help. I got most of my information from it."

Enzo cracked a strained smile. "Thank you," he exhaled. "Really."

I smiled, nodding. "Of course." I hesitated for a moment. "Are you doing alright? That's probably a rubbish question to ask considering all that is going on but..."

Enzo pinched the bridge of his nose. "They want me to testify against her."

My mouth fell agape.

"Mum's not... pleased by all of this, to say the least. Father isn't speaking a word to me, which admittedly, is easier than the alternative."

If there was a way my heart could reach down and lift him, I would do it. My heart ached for him; seeing how torn he was and the burdens he continued to carry, it didn't occur to me sooner how much further strain this situation would put on Enzo.

"Enzo... you don't have to do anything you don't want to." I leaned forward on the table slightly, looking at him sincerely. "Don't feel pressured by anyone-not the lot of us and not your parents. Nobody will blame you for what you decide to do. Do what feels right to you."
