RAIN CLOUDS LINGER ON

As I stood in the Astronomy tower that once was a sanctuary-where I would come to read a book or get some fresh air, sometimes even just stand for hours and watch the stars because it brought me peace-all I could think now, as I looked down at how high up I was, I couldn't help but wonder, what if I just jump?

The idea was so appealing, it made me scared of my own mind and thoughts.

Once you have been tortured, you can never really belong in this world again. There is no place that can ever be your home. Your own body and mind don't welcome you.

"I thought I'd find you up here."

I turned around to see Fred and Hermione coming up the stairs.

"Where have you been all night?" Hermione nudged me with her elbow as she came to stand beside me. "You aren't coming to the party the Hufflepuff's are hosting in their common room?"

I shrugged, gazing out into the world cloaked in darkness. The trees swayed in the wind, their branches seemingly engaged in a fierce battle with the sky. There was a time when I might have perceived their dance, but now, all I could discern in their motion was a sense of aggression.

"It always makes me laugh that the Huff's are the best partiers," Fred snickered quietly. "Everyone thinks they'd be the innocent ones but a whole lot of stoners, those ones are."

I cracked a small smile.

Hermione looked at me with concern flooding her eyes. "What's wrong, Elysia?"

"Nothing," I forced a smile. "I'm just not so sure I'm in a partying mood."

"It might make you feel better," Fred suggested, his voice gentle. "Distract you from whatever is going on in that mind of yours."

I looked between the two of them before looking out at the sky again.

I could just jump. It seems so simple.

"Okay." I turned to look at Fred. "Let's go party."

An hour later, a whole bottle of Firewhiskey coursed through my veins, rendering me incapable of sight or coherent thought. It was perhaps the most profound sense of relaxation I had experienced in months, a state of blissful oblivion. Not a single thought occupied my mind. Every bone and muscle in my body had succumbed to numbing tranquility. I found myself dancing effortlessly with Hermione, Luna, Pansy, Ginny, and the twins-my closest friends. Our bodies moved in perfect harmony with the blaring muggle music that engulfed the common room, drowning out any fleeting thoughts that dared to intrude upon the moment.

Not long later, a group of us sat around in a circle. It had been George who suggested we play the quintessential, "innocent" party game of Spin The Wand, leaving the spinner to kiss whoever the wand pointed to.
