YOU'RE SOMEONE ELSE

Draco

She tried to gather all the broken pieces of herself and brush them away, tossing them in the ocean or hiding them under a rug. She acted as though she was okay, like she was the same person who disappeared from Hogwarts almost two months ago now-but she was not.

She was drowning behind her own eyes.

When she fell asleep in my arms, I would lie awake for hours just watching her breathe, listening to her heart beating.

As if a fog grew between us and I was afraid that soon, I would lose sight of her behind the mist, reach out for her and find that she vanished right into the brume.

She had grown much thinner, her skin paler than it used to be. Her usual cheeks that were full and tinging crimson were now hollowing and so colourless, she was beginning to look grey.

The light she once held in her eyes was beyond description. It instilled a love tempered by awe, purifying each heart it inflamed. They told unknown stories and were filled with bustling life. I surely would have given my life to protect that light, the light of my life. Those eyes-they were a passageway to the depth of her soul.

It broke my heart to see those same eyes, now nothing but fogging with coldness. Like the moon split in half, the stars crumbling and falling like fireworks into the sea. The world fell apart behind those eyes, the light fading and fading until it went out completely.

She looks like herself but she's someone else, only not on the surface. She talks like herself, but I almost hear someone else.

I wanted so desperately to just hold her forever, if that's what it took to make sure she wouldn't vanish right into thin air, evaporating from my own hands.

I would break off pieces of my own heart to fill the holes in hers.

"Mate," Blaise waved a hand in my face. "What's going on with you?"

"He's staring at her again." Pansy watched me tiredly, her head resting in the palm of her hand as the three of us sat in the library.

Elysia sat on the other end of the room with the Weasley twins. She laughed faintly as something they said but it didn't quite reach her eyes.

"You lot don't really think she's doing as well as she's saying, do you?" I looked between Pansy and Blaise.

Pansy snorted. "No. She's a shite liar and you can just-" Pansy winced, her expression going pained. She sighed as she turned and looked at Elysia herself. "You can see it. She's just-she's not entirely herself. Not the way she used to be."

"I think back to the one day we sat in the courtyard," Blaise spoke quietly. "The Forget-Me-Not day when we had-a weird eye analyzing moment, all of us. That person isn't her anymore, not entirely. She just-she feels as though she's lost in a haze, she does."
