24 hours:

September 19, 1994.

"Welcome back Dr. L/n" Mark greeted me as I entered the doors to the er. I was a resident. and I guess you could say I didn't really live up to Morgenstern's standard because I never really published much but, I didn't have interest in any chief resident positions in the future. I didn't mess with the whole management and leadership stuff.

"My favorite place" I scoffed.

"Don't look so disappointed, there's a wonderful drunk in curtain one with your name on it"

"How generous of you Mark!"

Mark, Susan, Doug, and I had been pretty close the past year or two.

We were close with Carol until she had her falling out with Doug.

I threw my lab coat on and headed to curtain one.

"There she is," Doug smiled.

He was attached to an iv pole. Doug Ross was notorious for partying late at night so, it was no surprise he was drunk this morning. That's why I no longer asked questions about him.

"what do you have here?"

"drunk left over from last night, slashed his face on god knows what"

"how was your vacation?"

"beautiful beaches, tanning, pina colada in hand"Ii smiled

"alright that's enough"

he rolled his eyes.

"Welcome back" he added, patting my back.

Doug was also notorious for making trouble, for some reason I had a soft spot for him though.

It was later that morning, the new med students arrived. Somehow, I dodged that bullet and didn't have to mentor one.

"let's guess what he's here for" Doug said

We all were huddled together, staring at the new med student walking through the door.

"John Carter" He put out his hand for Susan to shake

"Peter Benton, you're my med student" Peter spoke

"what rotation did you come from?" Mark asked

"dermatology," the student said

"ah, yes the well-dressed specialty" Doug snickered

It was later that morning, the er was oddly slow.

"I'm Dr. L/n, your daughter is complaining of trouble when urinating?"

"yes, that's correct" the mother said

"okay, it burns when you urinate?"

"Yeah"

"how long has this been going on for?"

"a couple of weeks"

"okay, are you going to the bathroom frequently"

"yes"

"okay, MomI'm going to ask you to step out for a couple of minutes while I examine her and ask her a couple more questions"

"she's my daughter I'd rather stay"

"It's hospital policy, ma'am"

She stepped outside.

"Now, Lauren are you by any chance sexually active"

"no"

"is that the truth?"

"It's a completely confidential question"

"I'm not"

"Okay, I'm just going to touch your belly, let me know if this hurts"

I touched her lower belly.

she winced

"Lydia, the mom can come in now"

the mother came back in.

"Okay, it just seems like a UTI but I'll collect a urine sample to see for sure"

"just sit tight for now, I'll let you know when the results come back"

"Want me to order a urine sample"

"That would be great Lydia"

an hour and a half passed, no really interesting cases, a trauma but it was quick.

"your results on Lauren came back"

"Thanks so much, Lydia"

I opened the exam room

"okay, the lab came back, your daughter has a UTI"

"Okay"

"I'll write you a prescription for an antibiotic, bactrim, that will clear the infection"

I wrote the prescription and handed it to the mother.

"make sure you get that filled and you'll be good to go"

"thank you so much, doctor"

"my pleasure"

A half an hour to go, my shift went by pretty fast but I was ready to go home.

"wishing you were in the tropics again, huh?" Susan said

"any place but here"

"pretty slow day don't you think?"

"yeah, I get off in half an hour"

"perfect, so you can take these sutures for me"

"Sure"

"Thanks, I have to let my patient know he has advanced lung cancer" Susan frowned

"Good luck," I said, wide-eyed.

I took the chart and went towards the suture room.

I was suturing my patient's head as the pouring rain hit the windows, making loud clacks.

I finished off the sutures, tying the last one off.

"alright sir, come back in about two weeks to get those removed"

"and make sure to keep them dry for the next few days"

"so when you might not want to wash your hair for a little bit" I smiled

"Thanks, doc"

My shift was over ten minutes ago, it was already dark out, pouring still.

"you're off?" Doug questioned

"yes" I smiled

"I'm on all night, wanna cover for me?"

"I'll have to decline that offer"

"darn"

"have a good night, Doug"

"I'll try" he cackled
