getting to know you
May 18, 1999

i'd been working for the past few hours. it was a boring kind of day. boils and pee infections type of boring.
i walked out to the admit desk and everyone was looking at me strangely.
"what's going on?" i asked
everyone giggled.
i took an extra iv back to curtain three. i had a leukaemia patient on a vent waiting to get taken up to the icu. it was pretty sad. a "medically empathetic" patient was in the room too.
"when's your due date?" she asked me
lydia shot me a weird look, going out the door. however, she stopped and waited for my answer
"november" i smiled
lydia left.
"how'd you know that?" i asked, wide eyed
"i'm an empath" she smiled
"any names in mind?"
"not yet"
"i sense something"
"what?"
"do you know the gender?"
"no"
"you should go find out" she smiled

it was a little later, i was in an empty exam room trying to give myself an ultrasound. that's when carol came in.
"sorry"
"need some help?" she asked
"yeah" i laughed
"that empath patient rhinks she knows the gender"
carol took the ultrasound and looked at the baby.
"i hear a heartbeat" she smiled
she leaned in closer to the screen, letting out a giggle
"do you see it?"
"i think it's a girl, y/n"
"oh my gosh" i smiled
"you should probably go to your ob though"
"i will"
"congratulations" she smiled
"thank you carol"

"how do you do?" elizabeth asked
she found out about the pregnancy when i was out for milkshakes with her.
"getting hard to cover my stomach up" i whispered
my belly had grown so much.
"well, you hide it well"
"looks like someone here gained a couple extra pounds" romano laughed
"robert" elizabeth shouted
"that's not how you greet a woman"
"nice to see you too romano"

after finally sending my patient to the icu, i was off. nobody was around so i just walked out of the er doors.
"surprise" everyone shouted
i laughed, the whole er was gathered together.
"y/n, we know you haven't told us"
"but we know about your pregnancy" haleh said
"congratulations" malik smiled
"gosh, thanks you guys"
"it took me so long to even process being pregnant so i guess that's why i didn't get along to telling you"
"but, i thank you all for being there for me because as you know, it hasn't been the easiest of times for me"
i looked at the ground
"i guess i don't have to hide this anymore" i added, showing everyone my belly
"gosh" carter gasped
jerry handed me a box of diapers
"you'll need those"
"and i found out today, i'm having a girl"
finally, the er felt like a family again. i mean, an important person was missing but i felt supported.
now i just had to tell my parents..
