a shift in the night

April 4, 1996.

the past month or so had been quite uneventful. crazy for doug though. his dad tried to make an appearance back in his life, he was in a neck brace for whip lash and his birthday had just past. since his dad had come back, he'd been quite distant to say the least. i tried to talk to him but he didn't want to. he hadn't stayed at my apartment for awhile and i hadn't stayed at his either. he didn't want me to. i didn't really have anyone to talk to either since mark was on night shift for the fourth time in a row.

"will you take over for me y/n?" he begged

"i would mark, but i've been on forever"

i began walking away, he followed.

"how are you and doug, y/n?"

"there's not much we or us" i laughed

"tried talking to him"

"oh, yeah"

"i'll call him tonight or something" i added

"well have goodnight" he smiled

"you too mark"

i unlocked the door to my apartment and stumbled over a couple things.

my apartment was a mess.

i unclasped my bra and put on some pyjama pants.

i sat in my bed and began to dial doug's phone number.

"hello?" he said

"surprised you actually picked up" i laughed

"what is it?" he sounded irritated

"if now isn't a good time just let me know"

"it's fine y/n"

"what are we doug"

"are we on pause, are we still together?"

he was silent

"because if you want to just forget about us for awhile that's okay"

"is that what you want?" he asked

"i don't know what i want doug, i just know that i cant keep doing this"

"this?"

"the distance, it's all or nothing"

"than i guess you answered your own question"

"okay then"
