last call

October 17, 1996.

i just got into work when all hell was breaking loose. doug was yelling at mark. but, maggie doyle, the new intern was quite busy so i helped carol do a pelvic on a 15 year old girl.

"can you open your legs for me sweetie"

she did so.

she was very nervous

i slid the clamp in and carol handed me the swabs.

i swabbed her.

"it's all downed sweetie" carol said.

"thanks y/n"

"it's no problem" i smiled.

i signed off the chart and made a beeline to mark.

police gathered the hospital as well

"care to fill me in?" i asked

he motioned to follow him, i did so.

"doug came in early this morning with this woman, one of his one night stands, she had epilepsy but she did coke, drank alcohol and did god knows what last night anyways, she came in this morning seizing and ended up dying"

"oh my god" i said

i was shocked but at the same time i wasn't

"he's really unhappy about it"

"doug did coke too?"

"no, his drug test came negative"

"he really messed up this time"

"this is normal doug, we all know he has a new woman every night"

"this time she ended up dead i guess"

"maybe he can learn from this" mark said

"hopefully"

it was much later, doug was sitting on a curb.

i walked towards him and sat down on the curb.

"i'm assuming you heard about what happened"

i nodded.

"i talked to her sister today, she had epilepsy"

"it's not necessarily your fault doug"

he looked at me

"but it really speaks volumes about you"

"i mean, you get with these women every night, you drink, you sleep with them and never speak to them again"

"you don't catch their names, possible medical conditions"

"you're a doctor doug, you spend your day being thorough and taking histories of patients, it really surprises me that you've never done the same outside of your work place"

"you clearly haven't had a one night stand before"

"doug that's not the point, i care for you"

"a lot"

"but you messed up this time"

"and i can't be there to defend you"

"i just don't get why people care about what i do after work hours, it's my personal life"

"as soon as your personal life interferes with this hospital, it's everyone else's business too"

"i love you doug but i can't stand behind you on this one"

i stood up and walked back into the hospital, i could feel his eyes linger on me the whole time.
