post-mortem

January 23, 1997.

i rolled over and groaned. it felt like i just left the er. now i was heading right back.

i gazed at my clock 9 am. i was on at 10.

i hopped in the shower, and washed my hair.

i threw on a pair of green scrub pants and a white long sleeve shirt. then, i threw on my winter coat and prayed that my wet hair wouldn't freeze.

i opened the doors of the er, threw my coat in my locker and put on my lab coat.

"wet hair y/n?" kerry pointed out

i side eyed her

"i didn't quite have time to dry it this morning"

"try to next time" she remarked, walking off.

i rolled my eyes

"so randy, what's new?"

"nothing"

"oh wait, you know that surgical intern, he committed suicide last night"

i paused

"you mean gant?"

"yeah"

"i just talked to him last night" i said confused

"i knew something was up with him"

i was so surprised and a little devastated to say the least. i knew benton had been over working him, he seemed pretty tense, i had no idea he would've ended his life though.

"carol, did we ever get those labs back on mr. madole?"

a suspected anemia patient

"no, not yet"

"okay, thanks"

"oh and why is the er so dead?"

"we're closed to trauma"

doug came storming down the hallway.

he looked pretty mad.

"need to talk, doug?" i asked

he shook his head, heading out to the ambulance bay.

i followed him, he sat down on the curb, gosh it was already getting dark out.

it was such a slow day and i only really had a couple of patients.

anemia, sutures, migraine, diarrhoea and pneumonia i still had to discharge.

"this is about charlie?" i asked

he stood up, so did i.

he looked at me for a couple seconds and put his hands on my waist.

"it's just like what you told me, you can't save everyone"

he began walking away.

"goodnight doug" i shouted

he turned around

"night, y/n"
