62.
the good fight
November 19, 1998

i was sleeping, doug's arms wrapped around me tightly. the phone rang, then doug's pager.
he slipped out of bed, dialling the phone.
"hello?" i heard him say from the kitchen.
he made his way back to the bedroom.
"what was that?" i groaned, rubbing my eyes.
"the hospital"
"complicated case, a little girl" he whispered
"i'll come" i said, getting out of bed.
"you don't have to"
"well, i'm on soon enough"
i rummaged in doug's closet and found a long sleeve shirt of mine. i tied scrub pants on.

doug drove us to the hospital. a little girl, needed a surgery on her spleen. the father, whose blood she needed split.
i was on the phone, calling every blood bank i could possibly get a hold of.
"try this number, i've had good experience with them" weaver said
i took the piece of paper and dialled the number.
that was the fourth blood bank i called.
i was on hold.
i groaned.
"thought you weren't on yet?" mark asked
"i'm not"
"jerry don't start a new board" weaver shouted
"what do i do with all these charts then?"
"doyle"
oh my god.
"hello?"
"hi, i'm dr. l/n at county general"
after another twenty minutes of being on hold, i finally got some blood.
i ran over to the trauma room.
"i got blood coming from nashville"
"really?" benton asked
i nodded
"it'll be here shortly"
"alright let's move her to the or"
doug walked over to his peids room.
"not too bad" he smiled
i shrugged
"why don't you go back home, get some rest" i said, stroking his face
"why go back now when i'm already in my favourite place?" he said sarcastically
i went back to the admit desk.
"y/n, i have a migraine in curtain three for you" jerry said
i took the chart.
"i'm dr. l/n" i told the lady
"ms. patterson?"
she nodded
"you've been having migraines?"
"yes"
"have you had an injury to your head recently"
"bumped it or fell?"
"no"
"it's been just so bad lately"
"have you been having confusion, fever, seizures, dizziness, or weakness in your body"
"no, i don't think so"
"okay, lily let's get her some ibuprofen"
"so there's nothing wrong with me?"
"im pretty certain that there's nothing wrong with you"
"we'll get you something for the pain and i'll come back soon to see how you're doing"
"what could've caused this?"
"have you had headaches before?"
she nodded
"well, it could be a multitude of things"
"hormonal changes, stress, light sensitivity, alcohol, even weather"
"i'll be back soon ms. patterson"

"i have news on that girl, dr. l/n" jerry said
"what's up?"
"the blood from nashville, there was a hole in the bag so they couldn't use it"
"god" i sighed
"so what's happening now?"
"they're operating without blood"
"you're kidding"
"no"
"i have another patient for you"
"you need to finish carters lp patient in curtain one"
"alright"

"mr. rogers?"
"where did dr. carter go?"
"he left, i'm taking over"
"i'm dr. l/n"
"i'll be doing your lp"
i scanned the chart
"meningitis?"
he nodded
"okay, well"
"i'm gonna get you to lay on your side for me"
he turned over
"if you'd feel more comfortable with this curtain closed, just let me know"
"no, it's fine"
"okay"
i took the needle and inserted it into his spine, the fluid drained out from his spine. he gave out a sigh in relief.
"alright, we'll get this to the lab"
"and let's start a saline drip, he's a little dehydrated"
"i'll be back soon, mr rogers"

it was a little later, i went to go check on my headache patient.
"how're you feeling, ms patterson?"
"so much better dr. l/n"
"good, well i think you'll be good to go"
"make sure to come back if anything worsens, okay?"
"okay" she nodded
"ready to discharge?" lily asked
"yeah" i smiled
i put the chart on the admit desk.
"labs are back on rogers" chuny said
"meningitis" she added
"he's a little wheezy, can i get him some oxygen?"
"yeah and give him the antibiotics in his iv"
"im on it"

it was much later, the er sort of died down. word got out about the girl up in surgery. carter and lucy came by with the father but the girls kidneys were already in failure.
"it's a sad world we live in" i ssiad
"you know, i would never just abandon my kid like that" doug said
"i guess we don't know the whole story"
"i don't know, its crazy though"
"yeah"
"you try your best to save them and sometimes you can't"
i looked at him for a couple minutes
"ready to go home?" i asked
he nodded.
"goodnight jerry"
"goodnight randy"
i walked off with doug
both jerry and randy shot us a confused look.

i was sitting in the passengers seat of doug's car, he looked over at me while driving.
"what?" i asked
"you know, i've been meaning to ask you something"
"hm?"
he was quiet for a few minutes
"well, you know"
"i don't doug, tell me"
"my lease is up and i was wondering"
i could tell giant smile must've plaster on my face by the way doug was blushing at me.
"i was wondering if i could move in with you" he finished
"doug" i said, elongating the g
"well?"
"of course"
"i can help you pack some stuff tonight"
"you really want me out of there don't you" he laughed
"shut up" i laughed, kissing his neck
"we're gonna get in an accident if you keep that up" he laughed, kissing my cheek as he drove.
