one more for the road

May 15, 1997

"cbc type and cross"
for the past week ive been taking all the traumas i can get my hands on. all i wanted was a little appreciation.
"can we notify the or, she'll need a room"
"what do you have here?" lydia said
"gsw to the lower right quadrant"
"she's not breathing"
i listened for breath sounds
"okay i'll need to be set up for intubation"
"good pulse sounds"
"okay"
i looked through the throat, i couldn't see anything.
"can i get some suction"
"she's losing a lot of blood, can we get some o neg on the rapid infuser?"
"she needs the or now" lydia said
i slid the tube in.
"we have another one coming in"
"is there anyone else on?"
"just you"
"what the hell is going on?"
"driveby?" haleh said
"send her up"

i went into the other trauma room
it was another young woman
she threw up blood
"pulse?"
"normal"
"okay, two large ivs, saline, wide open"
"type in cross for 10 units and we'll need 4 units of o neg asap"
"get surgery down here now"
benton was paged.
"what is this?" benton said
"internal bleeding, gsw no exit wounds"
"okay, she's stable?"
"yeah"
"okay sending her up to the or"

it was about five in the morning, usually gunshot wounds didn't come during the night shift, especially when nobody else was around.
"y/n, we got a drunk in curtain one for you and lac in exam two" lydia said
"i'll take the drunk first"
"when is anotner doc on?"
"weavers on at six, delamico starts at seven"
"okay"
"alright, lydia set mr alan up with a banana bag and let me know if he eventually wakes up"
"sure thing"

"suture kit is set up in exam two" haleh said
"thank you"
i took the chart and headed in
"ms. kerns? im dr. l/n, i'll be doing your sutures"
she smiled
she had a big slash on her shoulder, uncommon place to get cut.
"this is just lidocaine spray, like novacane you get at the dentist, it'll just numb the area"
she nodded
i sprayed the spray on her wound.
it usually took a couple minutes to take effect, i put a fresh pair of gloves on and set up for sutures. i began suturing her up, tying the knots.
"so, how did this happen?"
"the man did it"
"the man?"
"yeah"
"who's the man?"
"he is tall, has light hair and greenish eyes"
"does he have a name?"
"i don't know"
"does this man live with you?"
"he lives in my walls" she said matter of factly
"oh"
i tied off the rest of the sutures.
"ms kern, i'll be tight back, i just need to get a bandage"
i walked out of the room.
"haleh, can we get psych down here for ms kern, the man who lives in her wall did that to her"
"i'm right on it"
i went back into the room and put a dressing on her sutures.
"we're just waiting for a test to come back, i'll come back and get you once i get the results" i lied
"okay" she said happily

about a half an hour went by.
"psychs here for ms kern"
"thank you haleh"
"dr. l/n, thank you for calling us down, ms kern is one of our patients, she's off her meds"
"i see"
"we'll take her up and make sure she's alright"
"okay"
"thanks again"
"thank you" i replied

the clock hit 6 and i was finishing charts when weaver arrived.
"i heard it was a busy night" she said
"two gsw's, a few drunks, a psych case"
"haleh told me about the traumas"
"good work, y/n" she smiled
haleh stood behind weaver and winked at me.

it was about 8, i didn't really have any other cases yet. most of the staff arrived to work though.
"aren't you off?" carter asked
"i gotta wait for my drunks to wake up"
"covering the er?" i asked
"yeah"
"how did it go with anspaugh"
obviously word goes around this hospital. i heard that carter wanted to switch from surgery to the er.
"don't ask"
"sorry carter"
"y/n, your last drunk is awake" lydia shouted
"perfect"
"mr alan, how're you feeling?"
"where am i?"
"county general"
"do you feel okay?"
"i feel fine"
"i think you can go home now, try not to drink so much next time"
i discharged him.

"finally heading home?" doug said
"are you guys kicking me out?"
"i heard about your night shift" he laughed
i shrugged my shoulders
