i was on another night shift. i was so sick of them. i was sick of work in general and regretted not taking time off before fall like usual.
"im off" doug said, clocking out
"is mark still being a dick?"
"he's even worse today" he laughed
"wait doug, it's for you" lydia handed him the phone.
"temp clerk not in yet?"
"no"
i looked back at doug, the smile he had on his face turned into that confused, angry and sad face he'd usually make when he was upset.
he pointed to a pen nearby, i handed it over.
"no thank you, yeah goodbye" he hung up the phone.
"is everything okay?" i asked
"everything is fine" he said, beginning to walk away.
i followed him until we were down the hallway.
he stopped and turned around
"i'm gonna need you to cover for me, i'll need awhile off"
"of course"
"do you want to talk about this?"
"that phone call was about my dad, he died"
"i'm sorry doug"
"don't worry about it, y/n, i just gotta go and claim the body, you know"
i nodded.
"goodnight" he whispered, walking away
"doug"
he looked at me, over his shoulder
"i'm always here if you need me"
"i know y/n"
