men plan, god laughs

April 27, 1995.

i was dating doug ross. it sounded so weird. we didn't announce it to the hospital, why did we have to? a few people knew, a few assumed.

i came into work, i had an odd shift, it was short for some reason but i was on call all night.

"why do you look so nice?" i asked doug

"i have to see a shrink" he muttered

"not sure how they're going to help you"

"are you calling me a hopeless wreck?"

i smirked at him.

"why are you seeing a shrink?"

"diane leeds made me, to close the report file"

"oh, i see"

"have fun"

i pulled out an x-ray for one of my patients. pneumonia.

it was clear that he had pneumonia, the cough, difficulty breathing, high temp.

"mr. boyle, your x-rays came back"

"okay"

"you have pneumonia"

"you'll be able to leave soon but i'm just going to keep you attached to this iv for a little longer"

"do i have to take some pills or something"

"yes, i'll write you a prescription for some antibiotics before i discharge you"

"i'm just gonna let you rehydrate"

"i'll see you in a bit"

"well you don't look so happy"

i stared up at doug, he had a frustrated look on his face.

"kid with an aneurysm"

"neurology wouldn't operate" he went on

"of course they wouldn't"

"he could die in about twenty minutes"

"are you transferring him?"

"benton's working on it"

he rolled his eyes.

"anything else bothering you"

i scribbled in my charts

"that shrink didn't do squat"

"you were looking forward to getting some help?"

"well that's usually why you go to a shrink" he smiled

i shook my head

"you're off mr boyle"

i handed him over the prescription to the antibiotics.

"make sure you get that filled and please stay hydrated"

"thanks"

i walked out of exam three to the admit desk, haleh handed me a few charts to sign.

i eyed doug, standing with a woman, linda from pharmaceuticals.

"that's why i can't go out with you linda"

doug snaked an arm around me.

"y/n, nice to see you again"

"hi linda" i smiled

"well, i apologize" she said, shaking her head.

"i better get going"

"goodbye linda" doug smiled

i let out a cackle, walking off to the admit desk.

"how long do you think this will last?"

i asked doug as we walked out of the hospital.

"6 months to a year?"

"i'm kidding, y/n, im serious about you, maybe we can even grow old together"

"you think?"

he nodded.

it made me feel pretty warm inside. doug had a lot of problems but he never failed to charm you.
