exodus

February 26, 1998

i was running late to work, i threw on a tank top and scrub pants. i immediately regretted that decision when i stepped outside. i zipped my winter coat all the way up.
i arrived at the er and was putting my lab coat on.
"what's that smell?" i asked randy
the er was chaos
"y/n, i need some help here" doug said, pushing a stretcher along the hallway.
i gripped the railings, carol followed behind us.
"i'll meet you two upstairs" carol said. the doors to the elevator shutting.
it was just doug and me in there
"what's going on down there?"
"chemical spill"
"what's she going up for?"
"dialysis"
"kidney failure"
i stroked her hair.
"how much time do we have on the oxygen?" doug asked, tilting his head
i looked at the tank
"only about ten minutes"
an alarm went off in the elevator
"what's that?"
suddenly, the elevator stopped and everything went black
"jesus christ" i groaned
"what did you do?"
"i didn't do anything" doug said in a defensive tone
i ran my hand through the girls hair, she was starting to get nervous.
"we're gonna get out of here" he huffed
"how much on the ox?"
"about 8 minutes?"
doug grabbed the iv pole attached to the gurney and pried the door open.
it opened a little
"y/n, i need you to get in between here"
i shoved the side of my body in between the two doors. i pushed one side with my back and with my other hand i continued to bag the girl
"doug i cant, i have to bag this girl"
"y/n come on"
i pushed the door open harder.
it opened all the way but the doors on the outside kept closed
"she's out of oxygen"
"god" doug groaned
"we just gotta open these doors"
he climbed up in the elevator
"jesus christ doug, what if the elevator starts up again?"
"life would be a lot easier for me" he laughed
"get down" i tugged on his scrub shirt
"hello, are there people in here?" someone shouted from the top of the doors
"there is a dying girl in here, if she doesn't get oxygen in the next two minutes we're gonna be in trouble" doug shouted
the alarms kept beeping
doug pried open the doors a bit
"okay, we're gonna push this open now"
i gripped one side of the door and pushed as hard as i possibly could.
the door opened a little
"atta girl"
doug shoved his hand through the doors. him and the people on the outside pried it open.
doug climbed out of the elevator and carol threw down the oxygen. i attached the new tank to her mask.
"how're we getting her out?" carol asked
"get a gurney, doug you need to come get her out of my arms"
i began to lift her out , the oxygen tank between my arm and side.
i stepped on my tiptoes and passed her to doug.

the more i work in this er, the crazier the days got, i didn't even want to begin to think what was going on downstairs, i guess i didn't have a choice though. i headed my way down to the cafeteria.

a/n: that was by far my most favourite part to write!! i hope you enjoyed reading it.. that episode of er was also a really good one.
