January 29, 1998

and just like that, my break was over. a week definitely wasn't enough. i mean it was enough to just recuperate but if i could stay home from work forever, i definitely would.
it was snowing in chicago, it wasn't an unexpected thing here but there was about three feet of snow everywhere. my pants and shoes were wet and a pile of snow toppled on my head.
i saw doug on my way to the hospital, he looked over his shoulder and noticed me struggling to walk in the snow.
"you never get used to this weather" he laughed, holding his hand out. i held onto it and walked closer to him.
"i've lived in this kind of climate all my life, it never gets easier to walk in"
"so, how've you been?"
"i'm good actually, i feel a lot better, more myself"
"you look a lot better"
"how're you doing, doug?"
"i don't know" he shrugged
"have you talked to carol?"
"a little, i'm gonna try again today"
i wiped the snow off his shoulders.

"y/n, it's good to have you back" malik said in passing
"thanks malik"
"hey, y/n" mark said
"mark" i said, turning around
"how are you?"
"i'm doing better" i smiled
he leaned in closer to me
"your gums still bleeding? still feeling nauseous?"
i knew what he was getting at
"mark, that was more forgetfulness than anything else, i'm seeing a shrink"
"that's really good"
"you told doug about me?" i smiled
"y/n, i didn't mean anything by doing that"
"it's whatever"
"he came and saw you i guess?"
"yeah, it wasn't anything bad though"
"you know about him and carol?"
"yeah, it's unfortunate"

i was suturing a patient, teenage girl, knocked her head on a table.
"welcome back, dr. l/n" chuny said, passing by.
i smiled.
"did you go on vacation?" the girl asked
"sort of"
"i took some time off from work"
"why?"
i smiled.
"well, being a doctor can be stressful"
"people have these expectations on you and if you overwork yourself it can clash with your personal life"
"sounds like highschool"
"i'm glad i'm not a teenager anymore"
"well i'm glad you're back too"
i smiled.
"you're all set, don't get this wet for a couple days and come back here in about two weeks to get the sutures removed? okay?"
"thanks dr. l/n"
"it's my job" i smiled.

"y/n" weaver said, motioning for me to follow her
we went into an empty exam room
"how are you?" she asked
"i'm doing a lot better"
"you seem happier"
"i definitely needed time to reset i guess"
"well it's good to have you back"
"it's good to be back" i smiled
"sorry to interrupt, i need some help, y/n"

i followed carol into the trauma room
"we have a baby" i said in excitement
"she's nervous we're going to take the baby away from them" carol said
"we don't take babies away from such nice people" i said putting on my gloves.
i sat down on the stool and took a look, the baby was definitely ready to come out.
"okay, we're going to count to ten and you're going to try and push the baby out but when we stop counting you're gonna stop okay?"
"okay"
we started counting.
the babies head was almost out
she pushed again and the head was out.
"okay push really hard now"
the baby came out
"a beautiful baby girl" i handed the baby to delamico
the placenta was almost out, she pushed one more time and it delivered.
"congratulations" i said
the couple smiled
"thank you, y/n" carol smiled

it was hours later, my shift was over. i got my coat from the lounge and doug was in there. he looked really upset.
"i'm assuming things didn't go well"
"i don't know anymore" he sighed
"have a good night, y/n"
"goodnight doug"
