do one, teach one, kill one

October 5, 1995.

"chest pain in two" jerry handed me a chart

"thanks"

it was noon.

i'd been on nights for the past week, which meant i hadn't seen the new chief resident yet.

don't get me wrong, i saw her in passing but i never actually had a conversation with her. doug didn't hesitate to tell me about her though..

"hello mr. kelcy"

"hello"

"i'm dr. l/n, you've been having chest pain recently?"

"yes"

"okay, do you have a family history of heart disease?"

"yes"

"okay, i'm gonna ask you a few questions"

"are you having shortness of breath or back pain?"

"no"

"heart palpitations?"

"yes"

"sweating, nausea or fatigue?"

"no"

"okay, mr. kelcy, i'm going to run a few tests to make sure you're not having a heart attack"

"okay, malik can you order an EKG, cbc, cardiac, you know the drill"

"you got it"

"attach him to a heart monitor to be sure too"

"sure thing"

"thank you so much"

i turned around to exit the room when i bumped into kerry weaver.

"you don't need a heart monitor if he doesn't have extended symptoms and you should probably call down cardiology to give him an evaluation"

i raised my eyebrows.

"kerry weaver, the new chief resident"

"y/n l/n, resident"

"i'll call down cardiology for you"

i could already tell i wasn't going to like her.

"made your first run in with weaver?" doug asked

"i don't like her" i said, rolling my eyes

"nobody does" he cackled

it was much later, i discharged mr. kelcy along with a dozen others.

i was filling in charts when weaver came behind me, again..

"you should really do that when you are treating the patients"

"i've been a doctor for awhile"

"this is a way that works best for me"

"i'm not questioning your experience y/n, it's more professional and organized if you do it right away"

"i actually find it more organized if i do it later"

"if i'm in a more quiet environment when i'm not having other patients on my mind, i find that i can dictate charts better"

"thanks for the advice though" i smiled passive aggressively.

i took my charts to the admit desk.

"i hate weaver"

"tell me about it" susan groaned.

"aren't you off?"

i continued to scribble in my charts

"why yes i am" she smiled

"have a good night" she added

"goodnight, susan"

"only ten more minutes" jerry whispered

"i can't wait to go home and sleep, i've been on my feet for over 10 hours" i sighed

i unlocked doug's apartment, re-locking the door behind me.

i flipped on a few lamps and hopped in the shower then, i dried my sopping wet hair and threw on one of doug's t-shirts.

that's when i heard the front door unlock. i tiptoed into the living room and to my surprise mark was also there.

"oh hey mark"

"he's gonna stay here if that's okay"

"yeah, yeah of course"

"make yourself at home" doug smiled

i headed back into the bedroom and slipped into bed.

it was only about 10 at night but i was so exhausted.

doug came in bed a little after.

he snaked an arm around my waist and before i knew it, i was fast asleep.

if you call for me, i'll run to you | a doug ross fanfictionWhere stories live. Discover now
