abby road
February 3, 2000

i felt like hell.
it was flu season and i unfortunately caught it. thankfully, juliette hadn't caught it though.
the last thing i wanted was for her to be sick, again. me, i didn't care if i was.
i sneezed into my elbow while signing charts. i had just discharged three different flu patients.
malucci was complaining to weaver, begging her to let him go home. weaver looked like the one who needed to go home, though.
"so you caught the flu too, huh?" mark said
"yeah" i sighed
"is juliette alright?" he asked
i nodded
"knock on wood"
"i don't know what the hell i'd do sick with a sick baby, again"
weaver let out a crackly cough
"i think you should go home" i said with a disgusted face.
——
"you have a case of the flu, ms fife"
"what can i do?"
"well, you're on a saline drip right now so that'll get you rehydrated"
"but, after i discharge you go home, get some rest"
"and stay hydrated"
"i don't need medication?" she asked
"ibuprofen if need be" i smiled
i walked out in the hallway to mark, giving abby a tour of the er. the ob nurse that helped deliver juliette.
"y/n, you know each other" mark said
"oh my god" i smiled
"y/n, l/n"
"the baby on thanksgiving" she said, pointing at me.
"great to see you again, abby"
"ms lockhart here is a third year medical student"
"i had no idea"
"er rotation?" i asked
she nodded
"well, good luck" i grinned
———
after a few other flu patients and a boil to lance, there was a crazy patient in the waiting area. notning out of the ordinary of course.
"need help?" i shouted
"get the haldol" mark yelled
i went into the drug lockup and got the syringe of haldol.
the patient was flaying around and bit not only abby but also malucci.
i injected the haldol in the man's arm.
"jesus christ"
"i guess i can take him from here" mark said as the patient calmed down.
"i'll suture you up" i said, motioning abby to follow me. she had a pretty big lac on her arm.
"so, this is normal in the er?" she asked
"unfortunately"
"do you ever get used to it?"
i nodded my head "oh, yeah"
"it's a circus everyday" i smiled
"never a dull moment if that's something you're into"
she was silent as i sutured her arm
"so, did you ever name your baby?"
"juliette sarah ross" i smiled
"that's beautiful"
"i'd love to see pictures sometime"
"well, i'll bring her down from daycare once i'm off"
"i didn't know they looked after them so young"
i raised my eyebrows "i had to beg them"
i finished suturing her and carol was giving malucci an iv.
malucci was groaning
"atleast she's not giving you a foley" i smirked
"hey, you'll need one of these pretty soon" malucci said, defensively. he was so dumb.
"i don't think mines that serious"
"carol, do you mind updating abby's tetanus after your finished?"
"not at all" she smiled
"thank you"
"i think since you've been bitten, you can officially grab a chart and go find a patient" i smiled
she nodded her head
"and if by any means you need help, i'm always here"
"thank you"

achoo!
i sneezed all the way down the hallway. juliette giggled. lately, she was a very smiley baby.
she loved daycare and loved interacting with different people for a change. it was good for her.
i walked over to the admit desk.
"y/n, i need you in here" malik shouted
i looked around me only malucci was at the admit desk
"come on, i can hold a baby" he groaned
"don't drop her" i warned
"and please don't get her sick"
i ran over to the trauma room, carter was doing CPR.
"what's going on?"
he shook his head "i don't know this isn't my patient"
haleh looked at the chart
it's lockharts.
"get her over here" i nodded
"run an amp of empi and get the defibrillator ready"
malik charged it, i held onto the them.
"okay"
"okay, clear"
the monitor started beeping again.
"alright, there's a rhythm"
"oh my god" abby said
"he was a hypochondriac"
"did you give him any medication?" carter asked
"any history?" i asked
"i was cleaning his ears" she laughed
"his EKG was normal"
"how about his crit?" i asked
a look of realization formed on her face.
"it's okay ms lockhart" i smiled
"it's your first day and he's going to be just fine"
——
it was a little later, thankfully malucci didn't drop my baby. in fact, he was really gentle with her.
"she's a very babbly baby" he said
"she finds everything funny" i smiled
"cutie" he smiled, passing her off to me.
"she's adorable" abby smiled
"sorry you didn't have a good first day experience" i frowned
"i almost killed my patient" she laughed
i waved my free hand in the air "no you didn't"
"almosts don't count down here"
"it'll get better abby" i smiled
"have a good night, y/n"
"you too"
"goodnight, abby, malucci, chuny" i waved
"i'll see you tomorrow"
