February 2, 1999

usually i woke up entangled with doug. however, today i turned over to nobody next to me.
the clock read 6:30, i started work at 7:00. i groaned, getting out of bed.
i threw on a cream coloured knitted sweater and buttoned up a pair of black pants.
i grabbed a quick bite to eat and brushed through my freshly washed hair.
no signs of doug in the house
i zipped up my wool coat and headed to county.

"jerry, have you seen doug?"
i couldn't find him anywhere down in the er.
"he dropped off some charts and went up top"
i walked up the stairs to the roof of the hospital.
there he was, looking over the edge.
"missed you this morning" i smiled
"tried not to wake you, at least one of us should get some sleep"
"i love you"
"i love you" he smiled
"what's going on?" i aksed
"im not thinking about jumping if that's what you're worried about"
"well that's good"
he stepped closer to me
"all of this is just about helping a kid"
"all of what?"
"you and me fighting"
"come on, let's put that past us"
"it's not past mark and kerry"
"you really think so?"
"they said they don't want to make a big deal out of it"
"they want to prove they never wanted a paediatric attending in the first place"
"doug" i groaned
"that's not fair is it?"
"i don't think so"
"you put the patient first"
"that's what we're supposed to do isn't it?"
"you're too good to me" he smiled
"yeah, i know"

it was a pretty boring shift so far.
"y/n, you have a call" jerry said, handing me the phone.
"come to exam two now" malik said on the phone.
i made my way over.
the whole exam room was filled with dogs.
"oh my god"
"there's more in the car outside, can you sneak some through?" carol asked
i never thought i'd be stuffing small dogs under my coat and snuggling them into the hospital but, that's just what i did.
then doug walked in the exam room.
"close the door" i shouted
the dogs wimpered as we fed them cheeseburgers
"can i talk to you for a second, y/n"
"sure"
"joi and ricky are back"
"i talked to genetics to get a home iv but it'll take days to go through"
"i can make some calls at home care"
"would you?"
"of course"
"how is he?"
"not good"
"it's only a matter of days"

"hello?"
i was on hold for a half an hour
"yes, at home palliative care"
"it went through?"
"your faxing it right now?"
"thank you"
"you too, bye now"
and there it was, the home care would be delivered later this afternoon.
i walked around trying to find doug.
"here you go"
he smirked
"you're too good"

i had a just discharged a headache patient when a bunch of dogs came running down the hallway.
"get that one y/n"
it was a small black and white mix, i lifted it up and cradled it in my arms.
"y/n; wait" doug said
"mark won't cosign this"
"why is that?"
"he wants me to talk to genetics"
"didnt you already?"
"yeah"
"okay, hold on" i said, handing him the dog .
i signed the prescription
"joi might want to see you too"
"okay, i'll put this dog away and be right there"
i gave the dog over to carol
"can you let joi know i called her a medi van to pick her up"
"yeah, i was just on my way over there"
"thanks" she smiled
i went and talked to joi. ricky was not looking well at all. it was devastating.
"thank you both for everything"
"if we could do more, trust me, we would" doug smiled

it was the end of my shift now.
"y/n, i have another favor"
i was signing charts
"which is?"
"joi called me, she was really distressed"
"okay?"
"i told her we'd go over there"
"did you tell doug this?"
"he wasn't that happy"
"i'm heading over there now, you don't have to come if you don't want"
i paused
"i'll stay a little while if you want"
"it means a lot, y/n" she smiled

doug was back at the apartment.
i ever thought it would happen, i didn't even want to be involved in this case but now i was the one giving pain medication to ricky and reading jois daughter a bedtime story.

after twenty minutes over there, i headed home.
doug was doing charts in the living room. as i got ready for bed, he and i didn't exchange one word.
"i know you didn't want to go over there and i'm sorry that i did"
"y/n" he said
i looked at him
"i'm not mad" he smiled
"but?"
"i don't want you to get in trouble with mark or kerry"
"and"
he paused
"i don't want to fight with you anymore"
