the miracle worker
December 24, 1998

doug and i had been living together officially for a couple weeks now. it was crazy to think about. it was christmas eve and i couldn't believe how fast the fall flew by.
i was looking in the mirror and i buttoned up a pair of tan wide leg pants, a stretchy burgundy shirt into them. doug came behind me.
"merry christmas" he smiled, wrapping his arms around my waist.
"plans for tonight?"
we looked at each others reflections in the mirror.
"i have to go to mass"
"have to?"
his smile disappeared
"it's tradition"
"you don't have to come"
i turned to face him.
"it's at 7, i'll be back at 8 so we can enjoy the rest of the night"
he pursed his lips.
"i'll think about it okay"

"you know, y/n" mark said
"i have a great patient for you"
he was aggravated
"oh really?"
i raised an eyebrow
"exam two" he smiled, handing me the chart
"i'll get to it"
"i gotta call benton for this fat guy over here"
i pointed to my other patient and began dialling the phone
doug came around and wrapped his arms around my neck
"made a decision yet?"
"hi, i need benton down here in the er for a consult"
"it's y/n l/n"
i hung up the phone.
"i think i'm going doug" i smiled
he gave me a frown
"it's only and hour"
"now if you excuse me, i have a 400 pound man i need to look after"
benton arrived shortly after i called
"i got a man here who just had a gastric restrictive surgery, i think one of this staples might be busted"
"alright, i can take it from here"
"thanks"
then i headed to exam two.
"i don't want her, she looks mean"
"nice to meet you too, im dr. l/n"
"so, you passed out?"
"i was at the christmas eve sale, it was hot, stuffy and i was hungry, i passed out"
"okay, connie, get cardiac enzymes, chem 7, you know the drill"
"i already told the doctor before you that im not paying for those expensive tests"
"ma'am" i sighed
"in order to reach your diagnosis, ill need to run some tests"
"your trying to gip me off"
"i promise i'm not"
"im leaving"
she began to get up
"are you refusing my medical treatment?"
"why yes i am"
"i'll need you to sign this"
i handed her the ama sheet. she signed it.
"have a very merry christmas" i smiled, walking out of the room.
"how was that?" mark asked
"just great"

"y/n, do you think dr. lee is a little odd?"
"i think a lot of us do"
"she, kerry, dr. l/n agrees"
"hold on a moment, i didn't say that"
"jerry wants to think dr. lee is doing some weird spell on mark, going through his things, writing explicit things, stealing his stuff, i mean that's crazy"
"i'm gonna stay neutral on this situation"
"expect the unexpected i guess" i added

it was much later now, it began to get darker outside too.
"y/n" doug said
"i have a pregnant 13 year old she wants to abort the baby"
he paused
"im jammed right now, could you take over and set that up"
"of course doug"
i took the chart.
carol was also working on the case
"want me to see if there's availability?" she asked
"yeah, give them a call"
i went in the room
"hey, you alright?"
the girl was looking out the window.
"you can't tell my mom, right?"
"i can't tell her if you don't want me to"
she was silent
"i can't do this" she said
"it's a mortal sin" she added
"if you were me, would you get the abortion?"
"i don't believe that having an abortion is a sin"
"you have to be the one to decide if that's what you want though"
"my mom would kill me if she found out about this"
"you can take some time to think about it if you want"
she paused
"i want you to call my mom"
i nodded.
"carol, she's having second thoughts, she wants to call her mom"
"okay, i can make that happen"
i began walking away
"i can talk to her if you want"
"sure"

it was toward the end of my shift now.
"y/n, why is a priest talking to that 13 year old girl?"
"what do you mean?"
i looked in the exam room
"she was having second thoughts, i told her to think about it, carol said she'd talk to her"
"i didn't want that to happen" he laughed
"he's gonna talk her out of it"
"doug, just wait a minute"
he stormed off.

the mother and daughter went home. they told me they were going to think about it. i didn't want the girl to be forced to have a baby either but it was ultimately her choice.
"i'm sorry" doug whispered
"i'm sorry too" i smiled
"you're not sorry enough to skip mass are you?"
"we can have our fun when i get back"
he smirked
"i'll be waiting for you"
"i'm sure you will be"
a party was going on in the lounge. i, however, walked outside to the ambulance bay. doug ran up to me, picking me up, twirling me around and planted a kiss on my cheek.
