they treat horses, don't they?
October 8, 1998

i ran over to the incoming trauma, putting my gloves on.
"what's this?"
"oh lordie" i said, looking at the patient.
he had a knife sticking out of his forehead
"okay, let's do this gently"
"on my count"
"1"
"2"
"3"
he started flailing around
"let's hold him down"
"lucy get restraints" carol said
"cbc chem 7 type in cross for 2 units"
i looked at his eyes
"pupils are equal and reactive"
"which should i give him?" carol asked
"do you have any allergies sir?"
"no" he yelled
"alright go with the ancef"
"looks like it missed the eyes completely"
he started moving around again
"lucy you tied it to the railing" carol shouted
"get him 5 of haldol"
he was out.
"let's get benton down here"

i went back to the admit desk, benton was on the phone.
"you have a knife wound for me?" he asked
"yeah i'm trauma one, it's no hurry though i gave him haldol"

i passed by the drug lockup, doug was in there.
"scallops in a cream sauce?" he whispered in my ear
"come on, what's this big lunch about anyways?"
"you'll just have to find out" he smiled
i shook my head

it was later, my knife wound went up to the or.
mark came back with a bomb patient.
i put on my gloves, heading over to the trauma room again.
"o neg three units" i shouted
"what's this box?"
"we don't know, could be a bomb?" the man from the bomb squad said
"that's comforting"
"don't touch it, you'll be fine"
"let's irritate this yosh"
benton came in the room
"jesus, this thing is gonna explode"
"alright everyone you got about 5 seconds before this blows"
i never ran out of a trauma room faster
"5 seconds?"
benton was still in the room when it exploded.
"alright people he's ready for the or" benton shouted

i sat down in the lounge, mark and doug were in there already.
"is this the magnificent lunch?"
there was only a pizza in front of us
"well your bombing patient kinda ruined my cuisine"
"so, what's this meeting about?" mark asked
doug pulled out a letter and began to read it.
"kerry weaver thinks i'm psycho"
i looked at mark
"it's probably a review for the peids committee"
doug raised a cup of cider
"well that's a little too late because you're looking at the new peids attending"
"are you serious?" i asked
he nodded
i stood up and wrapped him in a hug
"oh my gosh doug, that's great"
"congratulations" mark said, wide eyed
kerry came into the room
"sorry for interrupting"
"mark, rachel's here to see you"
he nodded
doug and i were alone
"doug, oh my god" i said in an excited tone
he laughed, kissing me on the lips
"we need to celebrate tonight"
"oh, we're going to"
he kissed me again

i was at the admit desk, signing charts
"y/n, i need your help" mark said
"come with me"
i followed him outside.
"we're helping a horse?"
"yeah"
"i don't know mark, i think i'm allergic"
"please dr. l/n" rachel frowned
i sighed
"hold the tail"
i lifted it up.
"ok the tubes in" mark said
"can you squeeze the bag now?"
"am i gonna get kicked?"
"no cherry blossom's as sweet as they come" the owner said
"cherry blossom?"
he nodded, smiling

it was awhile later
"jerry go check on that horse?"
"will do"
"i'm officially off"
"wait, dr. l/n" randy said
"what's up?"
"that knife from that patient, can i keep it?"
she held up the bag
"hold on to it in case the patient wants it"
"if not?" she asked
"i don't know?"
i was kinda creeped out.

i took off my lab coat and headed home, i waited for doug around the corner.
"what's the plan for tonight?" i asked. we were heading to his house.
"well, we can get some dinner, have some champagne, put some music on?"
"that sounds nice" i smiled
