You would think that the death of Harry would've stopped them. But no, it seemed to feed their cause. They began to meet more and more, in parks and restaurants. I was always dragged along, I honestly think they were using me for face at this point. All the boys became points of worry for the government, but I was considered safe now. My father hadn't seen me that night in the basement, he thought I had been in the bathroom during that whole exchange. And Simon put in his word that I had been as well.
That seemed to be the only reason I was brought along anymore. I no longer complained about it, it was actually quite interesting to watch them work so diligently. I got to watch a rebellion be born, something the government couldn't handle.
As time grew on, Simon began to ask me to deliver messages for them. I became their messenger, and yet my slate remained clean. There were many new boys who now seemed to be a part of this mess. The only two I ever new by name were both named Cal. They were such sweet boys, always kind to me. They asked me how I was doing, how school was treating me. Most the other new recruits treated me as a slave, but they were kind to me. I learned their code names to be Lux and Freezy.
I suppose you know who Lux and Freezy are, am I right in that assumption?
*A "yes sir" echoed out from the gymnasium*.
But were you ever taught of their love?
*Gasps and "no sir" were sent back to the man*.
Ah, I figured as much. They never got as much recognition. But they were in love, despite the fact that they wouldn't admit it. The way they looked at each other, it was what everyone dreams to have one day. It's the same love that all the Sidemen shared for each other. You all know of that?
*"Yes sir" filled the gymnasium*.
Hah. The textbooks never really tell it as it was though. I won't get into that now though, that's not why I'm here. Now let me think, what was the next thing that they did.
Wasn't it the fire, sir?
Ah, yes it was. Thank you, almost forgot about that. The convenient store fire. It was actually an accident, that's why I often forget to mention it. It was Lux, Freezy, and Simon, whose code name was miniminter by the way. He may have shortened to just mini sometimes, but I made a point of telling him how stupid of an idea that was. But I'll bring that back up later.
The fire: it was an accident, as I mentioned earlier. It was just a series of unlucky events, despite the fact that everyone wants to think it was planned. The meeting of those three was planned, I will admit that. But the purpose wasn't to burn down the store, and they hated the fact that they did. The purpose was to cause a scene, bring light to the government's wrongdoings and spark up more response for their rebellion. But someone who saw them recognized Simon, and took it into their hands to try to rid the world of him. The lighter was meant to hit Simon, lighting him aflame and killing him slowly. But it missed, setting the books behind him on fire instead.
They ran out of there, knowing their lives depended on it. I had been around the back, listening to the commotion. Simon ran to me, telling me to get home immediately. He said that he and the other two needed to disappear for a little while, and to find him in the old fort in three days' time. I agreed, trusting Simon's judgement. He knew what he was doing, and I had to have faith in him.
I ran home, just like he'd said to. When I arrived home, my father had asked where Simon had disappeared off to. Information of the fire had already reached him, and he knew it was Simon's fault. I had told him I had no idea, amidst the confusion of the fire I had lost him. He huffed. "Of course you did," he had grumbled, "that damned boy got away."
I think it was at that moment that I lost all faith in my father. It had been dwindling for a while, my faith in the everyone and everything had been crumbling away ever since Harry's death. But I think that night was my last straw. It was then that I truly began to understand what Simon felt, and why the Sidemen did what they did.
I had waited three days, just like Simon had told me to, and then carefully sneaked out into the forest. I was constantly watching my back, ensuring that I hadn't been followed. I would've hated myself if I had let Simon get killed, and I hate myself to this day for the fact that I did play a part in getting him killed. That's for later, though.
When I had arrived at the old fort, I was honestly surprised it was in good shape. A part of me figured Simon, Lux, and Freezy had fixed it up, but I do think it held up well on its own. The fort was almost a house, containing four decent-sized rooms. It was made of wood, holes that had once been windows were now boarded over. I had knocked on the door, expecting some question of sorts to make sure it was me. Instead, Simon simply flung open the door and dragged me in.
"I might go crazy if I'm all alone out here with the two lovebirds for much longer." Those were the first words Simon said to me in three days. I had chuckled, listening to the stories he already had. He told me about what repairs they did, how they were getting food and water, and all about how cuddly Freezy and Lux were. At this point, said boys had walked out. They scoffed at Simon's comments, saying that he'd be the same if the Sidemen were here.
"How are the boys, anyways? Do they know yet?" Simon asked, concern choking his words.
