Hi,
Not knowing if you like him back at this stage is probably a sign that you don't like him back. Not liking him back is not a bad thing. Talk to your friend. Tell him that you're not sure how you feel, and that you don't want to hurt his feelings. I'm sure that if your friendship is strong enough, then nothing will affect it. Eventually, you'll be able to move past these feelings of confusion and worry without it having a negative effect on your friendship.
If he says that things won't get awkward, then they probably won't get awkward. Things will only get awkward if you let what he has said affect your friendship. Act as you would act before. Try to make sure that your friendship doesn't change for the worse. I know it'll be difficult, but if he had said nothing you'd be carrying on like normal. Why let this incident affect what sounds like a really great friendship?
