I understand that you have found yourself in a very awkward situation. The fact that he stayed on good terms with you all this time is something you should appreciate. This boy sounds like he's a good one. There are few boys who are understanding when you tell them that you aren't interested. Many of them can become rude once you friendzone them.
Although it is going to be very awkward, you will have to be straightforward and tell him that you like him. From what you've told us, I think he still likes you. Perhaps he was just waiting for you to come around.
Take the step before it's too late.
