Dana Elizabeth Adams heard the doorbell and let Callie open it. "Who is it?" the girl asked.
"United States Marines," two voices replied. Dana heard that and opened it and had Callie go to the family room to watch TV. The girl jumped at the chance. She hardly gets to watch TV in the afternoons since there is chores to be done as well as homework regardless of the season.
"Yes can I help you?" she asked. She was scared, worried and curious.
"I'm Commander Jeff Green and this is Commander Dane Phelps. We regret to inform you that your son Nathan Daniel Adams is listed as MIA," Commander Green replied.
"MIA?" Dana asked. "What does that mean?" she asked. It didn't sound friendly and she got scared.
"Missing in Action," Commander Phelps replied. "His plane went down after enemy fire hit it."
"We haven't found a body or remains of your son or his co-pilot," Commander Green added.
Dana nodded as they left and she started to scream as Callie got up scared and called her mama at home. "Hi baby girl. What's up?" Lena asked. "Having fun with grams before school starts in a week?"
"Mama it's grams. Some guys came to see her and they made her cry," Callie added as she put it on speaker as Lena heard her mama and she was screaming and crying and yelling. Lena in her heart knew something was wrong and left right away.
"I'm on my way baby girl," Lena added. She called her daddy at work and he came as well and neither knew what was wrong with Dana. Lena called Robert to see if he could pick up their Callie at her parent's home and keep her and the rest of the kids minus the big twins since they were with Mike.
Robert got there and Callie was confused. "Was I bad?" he heard his girl ask.
"No baby girl, but Grams isn't feeling well," Lena replied. "Do you know who came?"
"They were men in Uncle Nate's uniforms," the girl replied. "They were older."
Lena eyed her daddy as Robert came to get Callie and he had the boys already as they all went to Robert's home. They both knew it was bad news and only Dana could tell them.
Lena and Stuart found out Nate's plane went down and he was MIA. Lena bit her lip and hugged her mama hard as they both cried. Stuart sighed and knew he needed to tell his dad and fast and he would understand.
In Iraq in a cave, Derek Morgan eyed Nate Adams. "This is just great. The FBI transfers me here and I get shot down?"
"We both did," Nate replied as he eyed a picture of Derek's mom as his eyes grew wide.
"You know my mama?" Derek asked.
"Not personally, but by word of mouth. She's my dad's twin sister," Nate added.
"What? Hell no," Derek replied. "Your family is dead to her."
"Why? She was the one that ran off," Nate added.
"She said her parents would not accept a black person in their family," Derek replied.
"That is a lie," Nate added. "Here is my mama. She adopted me when she met my dad after my mom left after I was born. And your mama always had black friends over as a kid."
"What?" Derek asked.
"My grandparents adored my mama and she gave me my baby sister, Lena. I mean my Nana adored my mama she died a long time ago and my Papa Thomas is still alive."
"We told my mom not to listen to my dad," Derek replied. "You are a year older than my sister."
"And your sisters are?"
