"Hi Sarah and Marcy. How are you?" Lena Adams Foster asked. Lena was curious why they wanted to talk. "Stef is getting here late."
"We are good and you?" Sarah asked.
"Good and tired. It's a lot with nine kids," Lena said as Stef rushed in.
"Sorry I'm late," Stef replied. "Hi Sarah and Marcy."
"Hi," the two replied. "How was work?"
"Good and long," Stef said. "So what's up?"
"Well Marcy and I were thinking and if anything happens to us can you two take in Ebony?" Sarah asked. Lena was shocked. In her mind and heart it was a big no. They had no room, Callie's room was not an option, Papa Thomas said no more kids and Lena didn't want Callie to feel insecure about herself. The triplets, especially Callie don't care anymore that they don't look like their mama even if they want to be. Bringing in Ebony would undermine what Lena has taught the triplets and they would never take away from Callie at all. Two beds don't fit and what about Callie's friends? And the age difference?
Stef and Lena eyed each other and were shocked. Another kid on their salary and in their lives and where would she go?
"Um Sarah, Marcy we respect you both but to take in another child. The answer is no and we don't have the room and my grandfather wants no more kids in the home," Lena replied.
Marcy expected it, but Sarah was hurt and upset as she eyed her closest friend with confused, hurt eyes. "Really Lena? Seriously?"
"We don't want ten kids and Ebony is two and Callie is twelve," Stef replied. "And two beds don't fit in Callie's room and we can't afford another child and we don't take away from our kids."
"We have no one else," Sarah added.
"And don't forget that Callie's friends stay in her room every June 1st till January 31st," Lena said and that is never going to change till they reach eighteen."
"You always wanted another daughter, right?" Sarah asked.
"Who said that?" Lena asked. "Stef and I never wanted more kids between us, but we got AJ and Jack and they fit and I'm not taking away from our daughter, my daughter to take in your daughter."
"We are sorry," Stef replied. "We need to decline."
"This is crap," Sarah added as Marcy patted her wife on the back. "This is shit."
She got up and left to the restroom as Marcy went after her wife who could use a hug or two as she eyed the two women with respect.
Lena sighed as she remembered how she rejected Callie when her and Stef watched the infant and she never wanted her baby girl to feel like that again and how could Sarah be so inconsiderate? So selfish?
"Lena love?" Stef asked. "How are you?"
"Upset and angry. What does she think? We will take Callie's bunk beds away from her? Or her friends?" Lena asked. "I don't want another child in our home and this family has been through enough. Two beds don't fit in Callie's room anyways."
"And the age difference? Ten years and not fair to either especially Callie."
"You are right. We barely have enough time for them as it is and you are right. She is selfish, but in a bind. I feel for her."
Lena nodded as her phone rang. "Hi baby girl. What's up?"
"All my brothers are gone and so are my friends. So can we have a Slumber party, just me, you, mommy, grams, grandma, nana and nona? Pretty please mama?"
