Ages:
Jason - 13
Dick - 9
Jason was babysitting is little brother for the night. The night had gone pretty alright, Dick had passed out watching YouTube videos on Jason's phone, shortly before his bedtime. Jason had put him in his bed, and was now busy on said phone in his room.
There was a soft knock at the door, scaring him a little. "Dick, is that you?"
The kid pushed the door open. "Can I sleep in here?"
"No. get out!"Jason ordered.
"Please?"
Jason sighed and tossed back his covers. "Get in."
Dick climbed under the blankets. "What are you doing?"
"I'm working; this assignment was due yesterday. Don't tell dad."
"Mkay." Dick was clearly too tired to say anything. "g'night."
"night." He stated, shuffling to the other side of the bed, away room his brother. Dick was asleep quickly, he snored softly as time was lost to Jason. Time was lost until his phone ran out of power. He reached to turn on his beside lamp to look for the charger, and realized it wouldn't turn on.
"Fucking light bulb." He sighed, inching around Dick's body to grab the flashlight he kept next to his bed. It flickered it on, he crawled over his little brother's body and headed into the hallway.Everything was quiet, dead quiet, say for the thundering rain outside, in Gotham, that kind of rain is white noise; a lullaby. He lit the hallway by the light of his torch, creeping over the loud floorboards so as not to wake his brother. Everything seemed normal... rain and darkness; an average 12:24 am in Gotham.
So why was Jason so uneasy?Every step wrung the confidence from him, the loud Tiks of the grandfather clock ringing through the night, distorted. Maybe... Maybe Jason should call and see when Bruce was coming home. He snatched up the landline (ancient, he knows) and placed it to his ear. No dial tone. Jason leaned on the hall light, testing a hypothesis; no light.
A low craving sound came to his ears, now that he thought of it, it had been there the whole time, camouflaged in the lashes of rain.Something was very wrong.
He turned on his toes, practically crawling back to his room. Thankfully, Dick was still dead asleep, sprawled across his bed. Jason ran over everything in his mind: No lights, the phones wouldn't work, and that... carving noise.
A burglary! Jason knew his stuff, this was a textbook burglary. So what did he do now? He could signal for dad in the cave, which he was reluctant to do since he'd insisted he could take care of Dick for the night, then again, he could try to fight the intruders, or at least scare them off. Either way, he came to the conclusion that he needed to get to the cave.
The scraping noise got louder. If he was going, he was going now. He turned away and crept toward the stairs, every step sounded like a thunderclap. He tip-toed down the loud stairs. He was almost there...
CRACK!
He froze. There was a solitary footstep downstairs, it was not Jason's footstep. It was far downstairs, in the kitchen. There were a slow series of footsteps, heading into the foyer.
Fuck It!
He needed to get his brother.
He turned on his heel, sprinting up the stairs, hardly caring about the noise. He swept around the corner, colliding with... something.
Something short.
In red pyjamas.
