tackling an enemy is never easy.
especially when the enemy is faceless and nameless,
threatening to spill every secret the girls have ever had.
and as you know, secrets never stay hidden in rosewood.

SPENCER IS HOME.
I don't know how, to be honest. When we last saw her she made it sound like she was going to be in Radley for a while.
Mrs. Hastings invited us over in the morning to see her. She set out snacks and things for us. None of us really had an appetite. We were downstairs waiting for Spence.
"She knows we're down here, right?" Hanna asked us.
"Maybe she's just as nervous about seeing us as we are about seeing her." Emily muttered.
"Guys, she's the exact same Spencer that we saw last week." Aria tried and I shook my head.
"No, the Spencer we saw in Radley is not the Spencer I know." I replied to her.
"That was before." Emily said. She hasn't been taking the news about Toby well. She and him were good friends.
"Em, we're not just here for her, we're here for you too." Hanna assured her.
"Do we talk about him? Do we bring him up?" Aria asked. I wouldn't.
"I don't want to say anything that could put her back there." Emily told us. It's not even just about that. I feel like we shouldn't bring him up as the first conversation out of Radley.
"I know the cops said they found Toby, but they sent that second body to the coroner for a reason. I mean maybe there's hope." Hanna tried.
Our focus changed as Spencer came walking down the stairs in a dress with her hair all done. This is the best she's looked in a long time.
"You know how I feel about hope. Breeds eternal misery. We lost Toby a long time ago. We just didn't know it." Spencer told us. I find it hard to believe she's the first one to make peace with all of it. "Oh, you've got to love the Hastings. I just get released from a mental hospital and they welcome my friends with tea and crumpets."
I was beside myself. I didn't know what to say.
"What's the difference between a crumpet and an English muffin?" Hanna asked.
"Hanna, does it matter?" Aria asked. Poor time for these questions.
"I'm just making conversation."
"An English muffin is a baked bread. It's made of dough. And a crumpet is a griddle cake. It's made of batter." Spencer explained as she picked one up and set it back down.
This is weird. It didn't feel normal.
"How are you, Spence?" Emily asked.
"I'm alright." She nodded. I didn't believe it.
"You know you don't have to pretend to be okay for us." I told her honestly.
"Yeah, if this was the act you had to pull to get out of there, then.." Hanna pulled off.
