Chapter 41

20. 

Im 20.

I stir awake and Tsireya jumps on me. 

"Happy Birthday Sister!" 

"Thanks" I groan as I push her off me.

"What shall we do today?" Tsireya asks me.

"I don't know, its just a normal day to me" I say.

"Well let's open presents first!" she beams. 

She drags me to the middle of the hut and there is a small pile of gifts wrapped up in leaves. Mother, father, Aonung and Nuwani are siting there waiting for me smiling. 

I sit with them all and they all wish me happy birthday. I smile at them and then we hear footsteps outside the hut. 

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRO" Lo'ak runs into the hut and jumps onto me. 

I laugh and push him off me. Kiri, Tuk, Jake, Neytiri and Neteyam walk in after him and all wish me happy birthday too. 

I smile and say "Thank you."

I start on the pile of presents and everyone is watching me. Awkward.

The first one I open is a really pretty shell clip for my hair with tiny pearls all over it. Then I open another which is a new harness for my ilu. It's pale blue and covered in iridescent shells. Then I open one which is a huge shell and is also iridescent and blue, its a jewellery holder. Finally I open the last one which is a shell headband for my hair, its covered in pink, purple and blue shiny shells and pearls in-between. It's beautiful. 

"Thank you everyone" I smile at my family and hug them. 

"We got you something too y/n" Neytiri adds.

They pull two gifts from behind them. 

I take the ones from Neytiri and its a bunch of pearls you put onto your braids and the other is a necklace and ear piece just like what they wear. 

"Thank you!" I beam.

Tuk pulls a gift from behind her back and gives me it. I open it and its a cute flower crown she made. 

"Thank you Tuk, it's beautiful!" I say.

I hug them all and thank them again. 

"There is one more" Mother says.

She walks over to the back of the hut and pulls out a big present. I unwrap it and its my mother bow. Im confused. 

"Look at the woodwork" Father says. 

I gasp and my eyes fill up with water.

"Thank you!" I run to them and hug them. 

On the bow where it says Lunana they have had y/n engraved on it too.

"Shall we all go and do something?" I ask happily.

Everyone shakes their heads and says they're busy. Oh. 

"Lets do your hair with all your new stuff first before we do anything!" she says optimistically. 

"Sure, Neteyam wanna do something after?" I ask him. 

"Sorry y/n i'm super busy today, maybe tomorrow?" he says.

"Oh... okay" I say and walk to mine and Tsireyas area of the hut and everyone leaves us. 

'Why does no one want to spend my birthday with me?' I think to myself.

Tsireya sits behind me and starts to work on my hair. She is leaving my curls and defining them with my seaweed curl cream and then adding small braids throughout my curls. She adds pearls to each braid and then adds the seashell headband to my head. 

We talk about boys and other girl things for a while. My hair is very long so it takes sooooo long to do, i'm basically falling asleep by the time we're done. But it looks so pretty when she's done. The braids curl round my head then fall down the length of my hair and the pearls glisten as I turn. The headband looks cute too, sits just right on my head. 

"Thanks sister" I say. 

"No problem, shall we go for a walk?" she insists.

'At least someone wants to do something with me' I think too myself. I nod and we walk out the hut. 

We walk towards the beach and as we turn the beach corner the whole clan is on the beach and shouts "Surprise!" 

"Oh my eywa" I laugh and smile brightly.

We walk over and everyone wishes me happy birthday. I thank them all and then everyone starts to mingle and party. I take my time walking round and looking at each flower arrangement and thanking everyone for coming individually. After a few hours of talking and dancing i'm exhausted. I walk to the bridge nearby and sit on the end looking out at the sunset. So beautiful. 

"What you doing over here bro?" Lo'ak approaches me. 

"Just chilling, watching the sunset, its so beautiful tonight" I say.

He sits next to me and watches it with me. 

"Hey have you seen Neteyam? I haven't seen him at all" I ask.

"No, maybe he's back at the party still" Lo'ak insists.

"Maybe, I didn't see him there either though" I say.

"Im sure he's round somewhere" he says. 

"I hope you've had a nice birthday" he hugs me. 

I nod and smile. We sit and look at the sunset for a while until its dark then I see something in the distance. 

"Lo'ak can you see that?" I ask him straightening up.

"Yeah, what is it?" he questions. 

It gets closer and I gasp horrified. 

I jump off the bridge and swim to the floating object. 

Oh my eywa!

I call my ilu and she comes. I get on her and push the tulkun to the shore.

"Mother, father!" I shout in tears.

Everyone gasps when they see me down the beach with the dead tulkun. They all run over and join me. 

"My spirit sister!" mother screams. 

She runs to the tulkun and hugs her. 

"What is this?!" she cries. 

I run and hug her to comfort her.

Everyone is distraught.

"What is that?" I ask as i notice a flashing light.

I pull it out the tulkuns fin.

"Sky people!" dad hisses.

*Neteyam POV*

Where is she?

She should have been here ages ago now. I start to worry and call my ilu and ride back to the village. 

I arrive to see the whole clan upset on the beach. What is going on?

I swim over and see a large tulkun washed up. Dead. 

I walk to everyone and y/n says "What is that?" and walks to the other side of the tulkun. 

She comes back round with a sky people device in her hand. 

"Sky people!" Tonowari hisses. 

"Get everyone to their huts now" Jake says to me panicked. 

Me, Lo'ak, Aonug, Tsireya, Kiri, Father and mother all lead everyone back to their huts leaving y/n and her family on the beach to grieve.
