Chapter 98

"Mama, Dada!" wakes me up.

I look over at the smiling 2 year old in the basket next to me. I smile back and Neteyam groans then rolls over enveloping me in a big cuddle. Jeteyam gets jealous and climbs out his basket and climbs on top of me and Neteyam making us chuckle.

I take in the perfect moment happening right now, I'm so happy.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR J, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU" Lo'ak shouts as he skips into the hut with a present in his arms.

"Uncy Lok!" Jeteyam shouts and Lo'ak stops in his tracks and side eyes Jeteyam.

He shakes it off and says "Come on then, open your presents 2 year old."

Jeteyam looks at me and Neteyam and I nod at him with a smile so he crawls over to the small pile of seaweed wrapped gifts and sits next to it. Lo'ak whips out the camera Norm left us and snaps a picture of this key moment.

Jeteyam makes a start and opens the biggest gifts first, the wooden ilu and Ikran and gasps at the sight of the toys he opens.

"Mama ilu" he says pointing at the ilu and smiling at me.

"Good boy Jeteyam, it is an ilu" I smile.

"Dada ikan" he babbles and makes us all laugh at the way he says it.

He moves on to the next present which is his songcord bead which he doesn't really understand so Neteyam scoots over and takes the songcord from his garment and attaches the bead and Jeteyam gazes at it in awe. He then moves onto the anklet me and Neteyam made him from shells and pearls and he smiles and tries to put it on his arm making us giggle, I pull it off his arm and place it round his ankle and he lifts his leg up watching the sun hit the shells shiny surface.

He finally opens the wooden blocks me and Neteyam carved him from a tree and he picks them up and looks confused. Lo'ak sits next to him and says "Here, look" and starts stacking the blocks and Jeteyam smiles as it gets taller.

"Now mine" Lo'ak says and grabs his present then passes it to Jeteyam.

Jeteyam opens it and there is a necklace just like Lo'ak's with an ikran claw attached to it and also a big bead maze thing which is made from sticks and beads and you can move the beads which have been painted different colours.

"What do you say Jeteyam" I smile.

"Thank you uncy Lok" he says and crawls over and gives Lo'ak a big hug.

We do the rounds this morning taking Jeteyam to see different family and friends and them visiting us. He has a collection of wonderful toys and gifts from them all. He is so loved.

After a busy morning we take him back to the hut for an afternoon nap and sort out his gifts before the party while he sleeps.

He wakes up from his nap and we start getting ready for the party, Neteyam plays with the new blocks with him so I can keep him still enough to do his hair. I sit behind him and section his hair into lines and braid each section from the top of his head to the base of his neck just like Neteyams. His hair has only just got long enough to style it like this so I thought the party was the perfect time to do it. Once i'm finished I turn him round and my eyes tear up. He looks so grow up and oh my Eywa he looks like Neteyam so much.

"Wow look at you big boy!" Neteyam says with a huge smile.

Me and Neteyam get ready quickly and finish the last bits in the hut before we need to leave. We have a little bit of time before we need to leave so we sit with Jeteyam while he plays with his ilu and ikran toys and hod each other as we watch our baby.

"How is he 2 already" I say.

"Its gone by so fast" Neteyam agrees.

Jeteyam crawls over to the blocks we had put away in the corner of the hut and Jeteyam uses the hut structure to pull himself up and stands there. Then he lets go of the hut and steadies himself then takes a step. Then two. Then three.

Me and Neteyam look at each other in shock and my eyes get teary again.

"Oh my eywa J! Clever boy!" I gasp and clap.

He just took his first steps.

Neteyam grabs me and gives me a cuddle then we urge Jeteyam to walk over to us and he takes more steps towards us and falls into our arms.

After a huge family cuddle we get up and start leaving the hut for the party, we walk along the beach towards the party and hold Jeteyams hands, one each, and he walks along the beach with us while holding our hands.

We get to the main part of the beach and everyone is there waiting for Jeteyam to arrive. We get closer and they all start singing happy birthday to him. When we finally reach them we let go of his hands and he takes steps towards Lo'ak and Lo'aks jaw drops at the sight. He picks him up and swings him round happily.

"Look at you! All grown up!" Lo'ak smiles proudly and we get the party started.
