16. Excuses

He was widely known for making excuses. Whenever he missed a deadline, arrived late or not at all, or when he didn't behave according to what people had decided was the norm, he could be counted on to craft an intricate excuse for the situation. He had long moved on from the "dog ate my homework" stage, and had entered the stage of nearly outlandish claims. The people who knew him just claimed that he was lazy.

The real explanation, however, was far simpler than any of that. He was mostly motivated by the most ancient of emotions: fear.

And he found fear to be an excellent catalyst for creativity.
