118. Sympathy

"You owe me no sympathy. Absolutely none." My voice trembles slightly, even though I will it not to. She just gazes at me silently for a while.

"Maybe not," she replies at last, "But just because I don't owe you, doesn't mean I don't want to hand it out freely."

I start trembling even more, as it feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. "Thank you, my Queen," I say, as I bow deeply before her. "I owe you my eternal loyalty."

She smiles, betraying her young age. "Nobody even lives long enough to promise that."

How very wrong she was.
