As the ice spirit held his mortal lover in a tight embrace, he felt his frozen heart crack and split into two parts with jagged edges.
It was foolish to fall for a mortal, when you're a being with a lifespan that stretched to infinity. But the heart wants what it wants, and so he had to say goodbye before it was too late.
As he turned to glide away, determined not to look back, the corners of his eyes thawed a bit. He had never cried before.
He wrapped his arms around himself, trying to keep his crumbling pieces together in vain.
There was no embrace as cold as that of a heartbroken being of ice.
